I recently got out a 'like new' version 3 GS that I obtained a few years ago. It has had very little use and still has the original lamp, but soon after I got it, I had a problem with the take up motor (the small cylinder type) and eventually got a used replacement. This motor broadly seems OK but unfortunately starts to struggle if a 1200 is nearly full. However, by adjusting the small pot on the board inside, so that it's close to full power, all is fine even with a full reel. The only trouble is that as a result of this adjustment, the take up reel whizzes round at great speed before the film is applied to it, and also once the tail has passed through (until you stop the projector, of course).

I wondered if any other GS owners would consider this an acceptable compromise, as the projector is basically working OK, or would you continue the quest for a perfectly functioning motor? I do now have another that's untested, that I got on eBay, but I'm not extremely confident that it would be any better. Ironically, I have another version 3 GS that has the different type of (longer) motors, and despite plenty of use over the years, the take up on this has always worked perfectly.

If it works then yes. There undoubtedly will be some purists that will disagree. Mike Peckham (wherever he is) would have enquired if the motor had the original box!

Those take up and rewind motors have a very small commutator and two brushes. What I found is that in time the commutator gets gummy and all it needs is a good polish and clean with a bit of fine wet and dry, say 600 grade paper plus a gentle scrape of any deposit thats lodged between each of the segments of the commutator and providing the brushes etc are not to badly worn you should be back in busness. Its been a few years since I have done mine and if I remember right can be done in place without removing the motor.

Graham.

PS. Just remembered, that after using the wet and dry paper a good wash with something like CRC Lectra-Clean "non-flammable" is a must.
