Hi Clinton, I too have the "Apes" series, spliced together on a large spool in col/snd. The colour is still as good as when purchased back in the mid seventies, although even then it was a bit dupey, not as good as some releases from the likes of Walton Films at the time. They do turn up quite often on ebay,in fact the reels you mentioned, parts 4 & 5 were being sold a few weeks ago. It pays to have a trawl through ebay UK and USA, as they do turn up.I'll keep vigilant and if I come across them again, I'll let you know. It's the col/snd versions you're after.

The only reason I can give Adrian,is they're stored on a large spool in a card box in a room with no heating. The majority of my film are stored in card boxes, which I think lets the film breathe. The only fade I've suffered of late was my old std 8 mm "Jason" with varying degrees, the Talos reel being okay. The "Sinbad" std 8mm fared better, and still has good colour, except for the first two reels which were reddish colour when bought new.I would think that there are quite a few prints from this part of the world that still look as good as when purchased due to the cool climate. The colour on the "Apes" series didn't have good colour to start with, the flesh tones were too pink and too much blue, which makes them dupey looking. The "Golden Voyage of Sinbad" purchased at the same time,'74 I think, still has vivid colour. As a post script, I've just checked the film, and it looks as good as ever it did.The titles on the second film are washed out,as was mentioned in Paul Van Somerens mag. I can send it to you Adrian if you wish, and see for yourself,as I have'nt a camera for screenshots. [ May 29, 2013, 11:34 PM: Message edited by: Hugh Thompson Scott ]

Of course, you always have to deal with the studios and what kind of edit they'll allow, but all concered really blew it on this series of films.
These films were phenomenally successful in the 70's and these would have done even better as 400ft versions. I was always annoyed that they didn't release 400ft versions.
I've never been into collecting 200ft digests, (except for in the case of STAR WARS, of course.
Hey! This proposes a perhaps useful question ...
Did any other country offer they're own specific digests of this series and at what size? 200ft, 300ft 400ft?
I have as to yet find an optical super 8 feature of these films, but they were released by 20th Century Fox, and they did enter the super 8 optical arena, as "The Hot Rock" (classic jewel heist comedy) was released on optical sound super 8, and it was a 20th Century Fox release, so it is marginally possible that these "Apes" series of films could have made it onto super 8 opticals.
Personally, I would love to have those two first films in the series as optical super 8 features!

I believe that your right Hugh, (about the 16MM masters), as they definitely have a dupey look (the P.O.T.A. digests) and, in my opinion, excessively grainy, with marginal focus, quite frankly ...
However, for fans of the series, even having the 5 200ft in color and sound (that is, if they still have great color) is at least something.
