I noticed that some features were released on 600ft reels and then others on 400ft reels.
If I purchase a print where the seller put a 2400ft feature on 3 x 800 ft reels as opposed to 2 x 1200ft reels, did they cut into some reels in order to accommodate this? So in theory I could have lost some frames if the job was not done properly?

I would guess so, but I would expect that anyone who has moved features around like that would look for an appropriate scene like a fade to black or something to end a reel on.

I have thought the same. But, then I told myself, "What's a few frames?" Am I too lenient?

I am going to encounter a similar problem with my print of El Cid if I want to put it on large reels, which I really want to. Since I haven't done such work before it worries me. It is easy to splice, isn't it? But am worried, if my splices don't run smoothly through my projector, I will lose more than just a few frames. I can't afford to lose a print like El Cid. Any advice is appreciated.

Be sure to save all Head and Tail Leaders when splicing multiple reels together. And practice your splicing techniques before you make any cuts. I have several brands of splicers and use them all. Sometimes poor slitting means a print won't fit and lay down flat on 2 of my splicers. But I simply use a different splicer. And always attach long lengths of Leader to the reels. If for some reason the print doesn't thread, the Leader can be easily replaced. Which is the point of using it.

A little trick I do,and no doubt many other collectors Akshay,is
to leave about six inches of black film at the beginning and end
of a reel to be spliced up,that way you aren't losing any film.
Regarding "EL CID",I'll tell you how I've done mine,Part one is
mounted on a 1600' supaspool,Part two on a 1200' with the
intermission at end and Part three is on a 1600' supaspool.
All the reels are complete with no cuts.

I'd thought of leaving some black film too. So, it is good to hear you do it too.

The split you mentioned is the exact re-mounting I had in mind too. So I'll probably do El Cid how you have it.

Winbert, there's more to Akshay than meets the eye,I suspect
that he and Joe Balitski have a key to Doug's Dungeon of Dreams.

Doug did give us a key, only one key though. He then consigned Joe and I with the task of replacing his collection with a new favored film format: The Dreaded DVD.

My eyes welled up with tears when Doug said, "Yeah. Trash El Cid too, I just got a digital copy yesterday." I secretly kept the 3400' of low-fade film.

Winbert, I don't know what UFA is but some collectors say mine is a Kempski print. I got it from the very patient and polite Hans van der Sloot.

Hi Akshay,it's more likely that your print is a Lone Wolf edition
as Kemski didn't do EL CID, Lone Wolf sold on to Derann, whose
prints were good, but not as good as Lone Wolf's,which just had the edge.

I don't know what UFA is
UFA is the biggest super 8mm company in Germany. You name what film genre you want from 1970s, UFA most likely released it. Different with the USA/UK companies which company usually limit to certain studios or genres, UFA seems to me had contract with so many studios.

If you love Bruce Lee as I do, UFA released many titles as well as (now known as) Jacky Chan.

If you love animation, you can get Bugs Bunny, Tintin, etc.

If you love spaghetti western, you can get Bud Spencer, Terence Hills, etc.

If you love adult ones, UFA also has special section for this.

It released "El Cid" on 4 parter. I don't know if someone can confirm has one with good color, but I found all El Cid are on faded stage.

Akshay...I always do tape splices. You can peel the tape off and re-do them or re-spool the film any combination you want and not loose a single frame. If you are using cement splices that is a different story....

Winbert, you can see pics of my print on page 107 on the thread "What Films Did You Show ... " and maybe you will feel this isn't a faded print.

Hugh, it could be Lone Wolf. Two people told me this isn't Derann, one said it is Kempski and the other said Lone Wolf. They both were positive about this after I told the film stock is a "+ + triangle" and Derann never used that.

Yes, Bill. I was planning on tape too.

I used to have EL CID and FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE from
UFA Winbert, and only recently traded them in,as I have the
complete films. They had been rerecorded into English by someone, and a very good job they made in doing so.The colour
on CID was nothing to write home about, but Empire was very
good. To be fair to Akshay, all these companies have gone, and
unless he had foreign prints in his collection,he wouldn't be any
the wiser.I tend towards the Italian Western, not the comedies
and am looking for the Bruce Lee stuff, which seems to crop up
often enough,and at reasonable prices.
