I received a red fox print of fall of the house of usher with Martian Landau Everything looks good except for what reel one of the feature is mounted on. If it ever was or wasn't its interesting in itself Its marked all the way around with marker thats been wiped off of rubbed off you can see it in the light it reads :

"THE EXORCIST LONG COLOR GERMAN SAMPLE PRINT"

What is your input on why this is there? Here are some pics:

Looks like someone just used a Sharpie to write on the reel and then tried to remove it later when they used the reel for a different title. The writing is obviously hand-written and not pre-printed or embossed so I don't think its origin is from a studio or film vendor.

What would have been the purpose of writing it on there could the German print of the exorcist digest have been on there at some point? And did Red Fox use PLIO-MAGIC reels for their features?

Austin...Don't assume the prints you buy come on their original reels. As Brad said...the reel may have been for the Exorcist at one time, but the writing on the reel was erased after it was transferred to another reel. I have several reels marked with a Sharpie. The previous owner didn't want to get the reels mixed up when out of the boxes and also to identify numbered reel sets.

I think marking reels is a big mistake. I used to mark my reels, but inevitably the wrong films will eventually end up being wound up on the wrong reels. And it is a pain trying to keep films and reels together. So I no longer do it.

Sounds similar to "Where's George?" with the US One Dollar bills. There's a web site where you can catalog a bill's whereabouts by entering the serial #s for the bills in your wallet or purse. Imagine if there were individual serial #s for every film reel out there and a site was developed where collectors cound input where on the globe a reel has landed and with what title?
