Thanks for the suggestion. I've got both a 1000 and a 1000h, The latter is not as well maintained, so will be the one I'll convert into a frame-by-frame system.
I've done optical capturing - using an older version of the tool you have, but I want to go the next step.
I've just got myself a USB microscope - it arrived in the post today.
I pulled out the optics of the 1000 and just stuck the microscope down the aperture, with a torch where the lamp should be... very low tech, but wanted to validate my first thoughts... and I couldn't help myself playing with a new gadget.
Here's a link to a frame from the first AVI I took with the microscope. It was originally 1600x1200.

It certainly needs some setup, but the first impressions are that it'll do the job well. I need to ensure the light is even on the microscope, turn off all the auto-exposure stuff etc.
I'm intending to build a proper mount for the camera and replace the halogen lamp with a natural-white LED. I'll also dive into the guts of the projector and modify the rotor and integrate it so I can synchronise the modified rotor with the image capture.
I'll also be enlarging the gate, so will strip down most of the film-handling mechanism at the same time.
That's why I'm looking for a service manual, in case there's any surprises.

Hey Ian,
Don't know how far you've progressed in your project ...but, as an owner of Sankyo Dualux 1000's / Sankyo Dualux 2000H ...would certainly concur with Janice that the 2000 series is superior to the 1000 series, regardless of whether the "H" designation (Halogen) or not. The Sankyo Dualux 1000 (not H) ..is an expensive "bulb".
At any rate, if you're "gutting" the whole projector and using LED, etc... I guess anything I've said above isn't consequential.
Would be very interested in your progress re: the "USB microscope", and whether the combo (i.e. LED, gate change, etc.) worked out.
