Hello,

As it is harder to find still producers of film reels. We have started to bring these on the market again.

We have started with a budget super8 reel of 120m (400ft). See: http://shop.van-eck.net/film-supplies/8mm-reels/p-1a/

Now we are looking into bigger reels.
This 33 cm large reel for super8 films is the next candidate.
Would this be something of interest?

Edwin,

What the world (at least OUR world..) needs is decent, inexpensive 1200 foot reels: no warping, no wobbling, no scraping.

I have one that is so wobbly it would scrape the side of the machine if I let it.

In the best case scenario I'd put all of these on the Elmo aluminum reels, but then again I'd also drive to work in a new car every year...

-then again, what would I do about "work"?

What is the capacity of your 33cm reel? (That sounds about 800 feet?)

What I like to see in a reel is ease of film capture. The absolute best ones are the ones with the sliding clip that rises to the edge of the reel, grabs the film and then you push it to the center. After that come the ones with the side fingers that you push inward while you spin the reel a few times. At the bottom are the ones with the wide slots that the film falls out of about five times before you manage to spin the reel and make it grab..

31cms is 1200ft surely.

I like the look of the budget 400ft. On one side the larger area can take labels and artwork for a film. If it were this design but 31cms it could be good.

Just measured one of my highly prized Elmo aluminium 1200ft spools, its diameter is 31cm.
Perhaps 33cm is too much, Edwin.

The Elmo/Geep 800 footer is about that size, but then again it has a really big inner core, so it doesn't hold as much as it could with a smaller one.

310mm with the same bore size as the Elmo Jewel spool is the optimum sized spool. Please don't make any with tiny cores Edwin, this does neither the film or projector mechanism any favours whatsoever.

By sticking to 310mm it offers the spool out to it's maximum audience as any 1200ft machine can accept these.
Model the spindle hub dimensions on the plastic Elmo 800ft spool and you're onto a winner Edwin.

For an all plastic spool I think the Fuji is a good example to copy. The overall diameter is 308mm and the core is 120mm. It could be therefore 31cm with 12cm core. I agree the core should not be smaller and a 1200ft length is fine. I personally don't care for the SupaSpools that are 1600ft in 1200ft size.

The Fuji spool only clears the Elmo rear output guide by about 5mm or so on the take-up: so 31cms is the maximum.

Just a suggestion Edwin - what about designing and selling 12cm diameter cores that owners of the 1600ft Supaspools could use instead of the original smaller core? The side plates of Supaspools are fine it's just the tiny core size that spoils them. This would enable a good quality 1200ft spool to be made from the Supaspool parts. Possibly a good business opportunity?
