It's supposed to be a professional version of "Facebook", and about as pointless. Aimed (apparently) at Employed Professionals. Just ignore the requests.

I've been on Linkedin...for many years. I don't update it now that I'm retired. It's really not at all like Facebook. Here in the Silicon Valley people use it as a tool to locate jobs ...get referrals...or view peoples work history. I guess it can be used as a social app...but that's not what it was originally intended.

I'm on it. When I did the UK Governments A4E course it was one of the things we signed up to along with facebook which I won't entertain now, they all want your details to sell on. Nothing is free now, perhaps just 8mm Forum.
I personally don't see the point of them, twitter is another.
Sorry but I don't trust them with my information.

I was invited to join by several friends, and ignored the requests.
-then one day my wife saw an invite and thinking it was meant for her signed (me) up!
Then the spam came in in a tidal wave! Since I was now a "member" other friends started inviting me to "link up" (or whatever it's called), but I felt rude ignoring their requests, especially since they really are my friends.
I see these people three dimensionally at least once a week, but for some reason they wanted me to register our friendships online! (I'm MARRIED, isn't that enough?! )
So I sent each an e-mail thanking them (...but no thanks.), and got my wife to go back on LinkedIn and get me "delinked".
Run AWAY!!!

I like to connect with people within my professional circle on it. Funny, I' ve never had a negative experience from joining. The spam I do get is the same stuff I' ve always gotten well before joining. You can also privatize any personal info so people not connected to you are unable to see it. I'm sorry to hear that anyone has had bad experiences. Tomayto - Tomahto, I suppose. My apologies if I've rubbed anyone's rhubarb the wrong way.

Brad...I've never had any issues either. Like I said ... I don't use it much now...but when I was employed it helped me stay in touch with others in the working world. You never know when you might lose your job and a friend might know of an opportunity in another company.

This is true. I know many people who can attest to its usefulness in finding opportunities that were better than their present situations. I don't pay the fees to have a membership beyond the basic free sign-up. I'm not a believer in paying 'dues' to join a web site. Same reasons I never paid to join a video rental store. My rental fees I felt were suffice.

Don't sweat it Brad,
I don't think anybody's rhubarb has been rubbed at all!
Personally I see some merit to the thing, especially if you are in the kind of profession that relies on cultivating a large network of contacts.
What gets me is all the people I see in person who are intent on getting me networked into one of these things: if they want to talk, we should just talk!

I see your point completely. The very reason I don't text friends 24/7. I don't feel the need to narrate every minute of my day to people. I'll just call someone if I have the desire to talk. Or...I'll come to great places like right here. Good conversations with Great people!

Thank goodness there are some others who think Facebook/Twitter and other related social networks are a waste of time and dangerous. I thought it was just ME! Common sense rules ok.
