Even though it says ST1200 on this projector, doesn't the M/O switch mean it's both magnetic and optical? I'm wondering if the face plate was changed?
It looks the same as this one but the face plate on this one says magnetic optical.

Hi Steve
I don't know. I haven't received this yet. I bought it because of the M/O switch. I'm hoping it's mag and opt. I'm taking a gamble. But I didn't pay much for it so I'm playing the odds.

This is the basic magnetic only model
I can never remember seeing this for sale in the UK though. Perhaps someone knows different.
My first ELMO was the ST1200 and it was both mag & opt sound.
Looking at the picture of the one you have bought I would say it will be both, the face plate is on the drop down lid and the switches are fixed to the main unit.

Hi Dave
I was thinking the same thing. I had a st1200 but sold it and was sorry later. I just had a chance to grab this one for a great price. Seeing the M/O switch made me go for it. I am assuming the faceplate is just the incorrect one. Thanks for your response.

Pat, I think your ST1200 MO projector faceplate is probably an early version that Elmo quickly changed in the production run. After all it doesn't say anything apart from sound.

I think Paul is right in what he says. I don't remember too much about my original ST1200, but I did get it just after they launched which is a long time ago in a collecting world far far away. Sure it didn't have all that writing on the panel.
Pat I too regret selling it, to buy the GS1200. Recently bought ST1200HD to compliment the GS.
Didn't they change the colour over the years on the ST series? I think mine was battleship grey, but not too sure.

I have an ST 1200 which is identical to Pat's first photo, and yes, it's magnetic and optical.
What is different is that my left-hand plate has the words "VOL.SW -O- TONE" above the two concentric Volume/Tone knobs. There is no picture which the photo seems to show.

Hi Maurice
Thanks for confirming my thoughts. I got a great deal on this. Now I will proceed to get new belts and larger reels. This one I am keeping. I could think of no other reason for the M/O switch. So the faceplate is definetley the wrong one. Looking forward to getting this and restoring it to like new. Now, let see just how much "Elmo's Goo" it has when I take the back off. I have my plastic gloves and alcohol on the ready!

As I remember, the color was changed to a lighter gray.
I also had a GS1200 but I found it just too heavy to use as a portable projector. If I had a permanent projection room, then I would have kept it. Plus I feel the ST1200's are built better.

Mine is the same except it had an f1.1 lens when I got it. Yes it's mag / opt but the nameplate makes no reference to the fact.
It is the best one I have ever had out of 5 of them, it has the strongest motor, the least worn guides and plays optical films so much better than the D and HD I had. it is also the quietest St I have owned and I would never part with it. The only downside I speak of it over the others is it is mono only and the amplifier is nowhere near as powerful as the D or better still the HD I have owned in the past.
The biggest plus of these early models to me, is that the two rollers at the input guide are made to a far higher standard than the later models I have had and so far do not damage my films very much unlike ALL of the other ST1200's I have had!

Now I'm even getting more excited about it's arrival. I ordered the 3 belt set for the "D" model hoping it's the correct one. It's comming with the case and all accessories. If anyone has an optical sound film cheap for testing I will buy it.

How cheap? Pasquale
BTW you only need 2 belts for this model. One for the main motor/ clutch, the other is the transport belt .for the take up reel. i have a spare but my original toothed belt is still fine! You cannot replace these style belts nowadays and the round cross sectioned black replacement belts are nowhere near as good as the ones they came with.

Great price Pat. I'm the one who bought your previous ST1200. I ended up selling it because I have way too many projectors and was just not using it that much. Looks like your new one could be even better. I also bought your optical sound reel for testing. You are making me feel guilty. I'd send it back to you...but I'm still using it

Hi Janice
Yes I remember you buying it. That was a great projector. But this one is going to be even better. And I'm keeping it. I'm selling the Chinon 7000 to make up the money. I will find another optical sound film. A while back I had a chance to buy some James Bond optical sound films and I had to pass. That started wheels turning about the M/O ST1200. That's the fun thing about this hobby.

Nothing like the excitement of a new projector. Good luck with yours Pat.

BTW Pasquale, there is one of these projectors on UK E Bay at the moment however it is tagged incorrectly as a HD model which of course, it is not. Like yours and mine it has a nameplate model of simply ST1200 despite the fact that it is most definately a Magnetic and Optical model.

HI Dave
Not yet he was delayed almost a week in shipping it because he was out of town. It will be here Tuesday. Now I just need to find a cheap optical sound film for testing. I just hope it doesn't have what I call Elmo's Goo when I take the back off. Nothing I can't handle. It's comming with the case and all accessories I believe. A lucky find.
