I've seen a lot of these projectors with built in screens floating around auction sites, like the Elmo SC18. The pictures typically show the projector with a video camera shooting the image off the screen.

Are these projectors an alternative to a workprinter? Has anyone used one of these for telecine and gotten good results?

The Workprinter is a frame by frame capture telecine machine where the Elmo SC18 is a realtime projector and only runs at 18 or 24fps. For DIY captures in realtime you will need a variable speed projector, which the Elmo SC18 is not. It might be possible to capture if your camera and projector are set to 24fps...however with a 3 blade shutter you will get ghosting.
