I've just picked up one of these projectors and it works fine, except the sound.If you remove the front cover there is a pressure plate that flips down so as to clean the sound heads then it is suposed to be pushed up to press the film soundtrack against the heads.The sound is very muffled during normal play as this pressure plate is not pushing up against the heads with any pressure.When a film is played with the front panel removed you can manually push up this pad and the sound is perfect but as soon as you let go it falls away and the sound goes.All i can think is that there must be a return spring or locking mechanism missing or broken as there is nothing to hold the pressure plate up against the heads.If anyone else has one of these projectors maybe they can check to see how it is held up against the heads and let me know. Thanks

The sound head pressure pad is not engaging with the mechanical linkage which is activated when you turn the main control knob to the forward-with-sound position. Somebody probably removed the sound head pressure pad for cleaning and did not reinstall it correctly.
To fix this problem:
1. With the projector UNPLUGGED do the following:

2.Remove the lamphouse cover

3. Turn the control knob to the forward-with-sound (5 0'Clock) position,

4. Insert the red hex plastic socket wrench into the hex nut below the head and turn it clockwise as far as it will go

5.Remove the socket wrench

6. Remove the pressure pad. Check to make sure tha the four little plastic fingers spring back up when you gently push on them.

7. Now reverse the whole process

Your projector should now play perfectly.

Paul, the first models of the Series 900 have different sound head assy than the later models, so no hex things,

THere is indeed a red button which releases the pressure pad cartridge when pulled upwards. This is irrespective of the main control knob position.

To reinstall the cartridge in its regular position just lift it upwards firmly untul it locks. That's it of memory serves me right.

It looks like a different arrangement than that on my Eumig S938. On the 938 there is a bright red hex nut immediately underneath the pressure pad, and you rotate this to remove the pad.
I suggest you look at the instruction manual and read the section on cleaning the sound head. This might lead you to the problem.

I'm sure the Eumig S926 has a similar red hex nut for the same purpose, but mine hasn't bee out of it's box for many years (since the balance stripe head packed up). I'll have to use it again soon.

...a common problem with these machines due to the soft head material. Which is exactly why Maurizio's tip, of using an old pressure pad with the track 2 fingers cut off when projecting mono films, is so invaluable. My S938 is fitted with such a pressure pad by default, and I only use the normal pressure pad when projecting the occasional stereo film, thus saving hundreds of hours of unnecessary wear on that tiny track 2 head,

Have you successfully changed out your S938 now Paul?
I remember reading some time ago that you were about to take on-board the task of doing so.

I haven't had an issue with the head on my own so far, but to be fair, it really does only get very light use these days.

I am hoping it lasts the duration for me on this one, as I doubt I'd source another serviceable head for these too easily.

Andrew, I managed to get a good used head off a 940. It will be fine as a spare for my 938, if and when my present one ever needs replacing.
I am using my GS1200 for most showings these days, as I know the heads will just about last forever.
