Well, the projector did arrive today, but what a disappointment! [Mad]

Although well used and obviously maintained mechanically, the appearance and cosmetics leave a lot to be desired, at least, in my book. These are things like many scratches and worn paint on the body and case, knob bezels dented or missing etc. etc. I have complained to the seller as none of this was visible on any of the photos.

I am now seriously considering hedging my bets, [Eek!] , so to speak, regarding the other similar machine now on ebay. I have asked the question about condition, but have not yet received a reply.

Out of 150 odd eBay deals, this is the first real disappointment. I may now decide to stick with silent projection for Standard 8 instead, unless anyone in the Forum knows of, or can recommend a Standard 8 only sound machine.

Meanwhile, I'm considering binning this sh..ty looking piece of kit. Its embarrassing [Embarrassed] to look at!

We can all make mistakes, especially on eBay, and unfortunately for me this was one of them.

"Take care out there"

Dave.

I was sorry to hear about your disappointment in the appearance of that Mark S.....but I was just wondering if you are more concerned about appearances than actually using the projector to show films....which is what most of us use them for. Some of my projectors have been dinged up over the years...but they still run my films beautifully and are a source of great pleasure. Those Mark S machines are quite old...I bought mine back in 1965 , I believe. It received its share of bumps and bangs....but was one of the best 8mm projectors I ever owned. If it runs films in good order without scratching them, that's a great thing. I ran mine so much....millions of feet of film..that it finaly literally wore out..the rubber on the power disc just was worn down to where it wouldn't keep speed . But a great heavy duty, easy threading machine. Good luck in your hunt for a better machine. I currently use the Eumig 810-d's for standard 8mm and have had no trouble with them and both of them I've gotten off Ebay have been almost mint in appearance.

I have to honest and say that Eumigs do come up quite often on the Perry's,Paul foster and Derann lists so why not purchase one from them? The Prices of Eumigs are usually pretty resonable and your more or less going to be sure of getting a reasonable one.
I look at e bay and i'm aware some people get a bargin but in know many more who have been let down. [Mad]

Thanks for your encouragement, gentlemen.

I guess it was a bit of a "knee-jerk" reaction. Of course I realise that the machine is not just for looking at for its own sake, but I do take pride in my equipment, whatever it is, and I am surprised at those who don't.

I have lots of sophisticated test equipment and instruments for my business which have to be kept calibrated and treated well, as they are so expensive to replace, and I gues I have tended to apply this philosophy to most things. Don't get me wrong, I don't treat them with kid gloves or make a god of them - I just think they ought to be treated with respect.

Anyway, enough of my bleeting, just had to get it off my chest - thanks for listening. Naturally I'll advise of any further progress.

Dave.

P.S.

Well! I have to admit, perhaps not so bad after all. Having spent most of the evening cleaning her up, a definite improvement has been achieved.

ROB, Please, I would still like to accept your offer of the replacement badge, and, if you can spare it, the front elevation knob complete with the chrome insert, if that's OK. Many , many thanks.

D.

David,

I am with you. There is nothing better than a nice machine that looks good and functions well. Mike takes it one step further and goes for a quality box too

Oi, Tony! Nothing wrong with getting a piece of equipment in its original packaging [Wink]

David I do understand how you feel. I too love the eqipment associated with our hobby and take great pride in keeping it in as close to original condition as possible. I think it's a boy thing. Speaking of which, I did a film show for some friends at Christmas time, it was mostly to entertain a whole bunch of children and what was noticable was that the majority of the girls sat at the front and watched the film whilst several of the boys sat at or near the back and spent as much time looking at the projector as they did the screen.

Funnily enough, several of the Dads also hung around the projector and commented on all the things that I love about it - the way it looked, the way it sounded and even the smell of the cooling air coming out of the grill on the back!

Definitely a boys thing [Roll Eyes] .

Mike

PS I hope you guys didnt mind me moving this thread to the 8mm forum instead of the sale/trade forum which is for your selling and buying deals
