In theory, which should give a sharper picture - a 38mm lens or using a 50mm lens with zoom adapter?

I don't like zoom adapters. Adding extra glass to project through is generally not a good idea. So, I would take a 38mm lens over a 50mm + adapter any day. This generally also holds for zoom vs static lenses.
However, if I were you, I would pick up one of those ISCO zoom lenses from Ebay ( ISCO lens on Ebay. I once compared one of those with a 35mm prime lens and I thought the ISCO zoom was sharper without compromising the light output. Of course, I might have had a sub-standard 35mm lens, but I think most people are very happy with the ISCO zoom.
I use an Eiki zoom lens myself. It's range is slightly bigger (30mm-70mm) and is also an excellent lens (but harder to find). I don't know who manufactured that lens. I find the 30-35mm range a nice extra for home use.

I use the Sankor 25mm on my NT1. New old stock from CHC at £80. Very good, but I'm comparing it to zooms I have had before. I have the 38mm also which I use for scope with the Eiki A lens. All very acceptable though the 25mm is F5.
