Hey, maybe one of you ladies or gentlemen are a computer tech whiz out there!

I bought a leagle copy of Windows XP awhile back and finally got around to using it to rebuild one of my computers. You know, the standard holographic installation CD and all.

Well, it prompts to activate the XP. No problem, but when I call the toll free number, do all the "numbers" stuff over the phone and they state that they cannot activate my windows. I tried three different times over the phone, as well as a couple of times over the internet. It looks like that, though I bought a proper copy of XP, it must have already been used, shrink wrapped to look new, and resold. However I bought it proper and didn't try to steal it.

I went on the internet and found what at least seemed a good fix for the problem, (otherwise my XP would shut down after 30 days). It relates down to the OObetimer number. You redo the numewricals and letters (bytes) and click a few other permissions and things are go ...

However, just three days ago, it stated again, (with seven days to go) to activate. I click yes to activate, and the prompt stops, as well as no box coming up to do the activation. Apparantly, the "fix" only turns off the activation prompt, but not the actual need to activate.

I am now down to three days and I have this nasty feeling that my windows will go down. Microsoft won't help me, and I can't seem to find any kinsd of fix.

Just to state once again. I bought this copy of XP fair and square and there was no desire to defraud Microsoft. Since Microsoft won't help, I have to go elsewhere. I just don't want my computer to go down.

Any help folks?

Seems pretty obvious that your copy of XP is not as above board as you might think it is.
If it is, there should be no problem activating it.
Get your money back .

Thanks, I mwill try that Janice.

To answer that other question, yep, it is authentic, as the Microsoft representative stated that it is an authentic XP, but will not activate it, and when I asked why, they said they can't give out that information.

It's frustrating, as I'm a legitmate customer, or at least, I bought it legitimately from a seller. If he used it before me and shrink wraped, (I'm assuming that) that's not my fault. I even offered proof of my purchase of it to the phone operative and they hung up on me.

Don't get me wrong...I'm a PC person full-bore...but it's situations like yours that really tempt the switch to MAC :-)

Microsoft stopped servicing and upgrading Windows XP over a year ago. That's why you can't get any help from them. Plus they have the worst service I have ever encountered in my years with PC repair and use. This is what happens when a company gets too big. They forget who got them there.

Here, here! (to quote Bob Cratchit). I was a store manager for Staples for years and I can tell you Microsoft and HP are the worst when it comes to customer service. They're both so convinced they have a monopoly on the pc market that they could not care less about you after they have your money in the bank. Micorosoft won't assist you, Osi, because this is how they force you out of what they consider to be an obsolete operating system and into the newest software. They are capable of helping you - they're just forbidden to help you and Microsoft probably no longer furnishes their tech support associates with any 'road maps' to alleviate your issue and they are not permitted to deviate from what is given to them. In other words, many of their tech support people probably have the personal knowledge to help you, but he/she would be in violation of company policy if they choose to do so.

I'm a Mac person but I need to work with PCs regularly. Osi's situation is saddening as XP is quite a good OS (I still have one machine at work that runs it).
The corporations behaviour really pushes you towards the non legit side of things.
Can't someone help Osi with a fully functionnal version that's not off the shelf?

Some older apps still run better under XP. This is why I bought Win7 Professional. I can run XP in a virtual mode.

GM had this same issue with the Chevy Caprice and Celebrity. They made such a good engine utilized in both cars - the execs felt they shot themselves in the foot. Nobody needed to replace them. So, they came out with a crummy version called the Cavalier so people would need newer cars sooner. The automotive and electronics industries call it "planned obsolesence". This is why you often hear older folks say "They don't make things like they used to..." - so very true with alot of different products. Even tools today are cheap and crappy. I haven't found a decent set yet that I like.

well, I'm down to one day now.

I tried your fix Janice. It uploaded, but the countdown is still commencing, but thatnk U for trying to help me, I do appreciate it!

I am going to try a "key generator" type of fix, see if that helps.

The funny thing is that when I click the box to do activation, it doesn't bring up the box for activation. Strange. So, in other words I am quite possibly proverbially screwed.

However, the one good thing is that I have each and every game and application saved on CD's, so that if I have to start from scratch, I can reload up all the stuff, but it's just the inconvenience of all that, and then wondering if the damned thing will just go down again in another 30 days. Bloody hell!

Yep, my last chance is when I get home after this session on the library computer!

ThanX once again Janice! I think I might have another idea, but I doubt it'll work ...

I'll go to system restore, and restore the sytem to around thrity days ago. Hell, who knows, that might work as a last ditch effort, and if it does, I'd need to do that every thirty days or so.

... so, I'll report back tomoorow as to whether the computer is still up, or down.

Bloody hell! How could I have set the clock back?!

Well, the PC with Windows XP went down as of about 4 PM yesterday, (I access the internet through the library computers, hence my being on the forum today) ...

Curiously, after three different possible "fixes" yesterday. I decided to do my last ditch effort (system restore), and when I turned it on, it did the same prompt for registration, I clicked yes ...

However, this time, a box came up saying ...

"Your registration has already been activated"

... which I found curious. This did not stop it from going down hours later.

I did read on the internet that I could still access my XP through "safe mode", by pressing F12 as the computer first comes on and clicking "safe mode". However, in this mode the computer reacts very slowly, and most programs will not work.

However, since I can at least access XP through safe mode, I'll see if there is some kind of "fix" I can do in this mode, before I scarp the whole damned thing and do a rebuild of XP all over again.

I want to thank all the people who were kind enough to offer they're help.

System restore will not reset your clock. Try resetting it in safe mode. Just double click the date and time at the bottom right corner of the screen. Click on change date and time.
