Today marks the 65 years since Her Majesty The Queen acceded to the throne following the death on 6 February 1952 of her father, King George VI.

I remember the day very well. I was seventeen, and had only been working a few weeks as a Trainee Projectionist at the Odeon Cinema in Bristol.

I was given a ten-shilling note (£0.50) and sent out to a local record shop to buy a "sad sounding" record. I came back with a 12" 78 of Handel's Largo which we played at all intervals, and also during the silent "Filmlets", the name for the then ad reel.

The cinema is still there, but the record shop has long gone.

God bless Her Majesty, a shining example of grace, civility, and devotion to her country for all these years. It is said that Americans do not understand the Monarchy, but are envious of the British for having one anyway. I think there is a lot of truth in that. I believe that the Royal Family is the glue that holds Britain together, and the present Queen will undoubtedly go down in history as the greatest British monarch.
