Here's a great video about the Pathe VOX, with a cameo appearance by Lee Mannering:

I daren’t post the out-takes as when Pete and myself are together we never stop laughing. Yup we filmed this at one of our pretty regular meetings, another of my bright ideas, as we thought it might interest some to see the 1938 Pathe VOX running along with a short B&W sound clip which incidentally was filmed at the Cotton Club.
We’ve been having these meetings for years now enthusing about Cine, converting machines and demonstrating them which has been great fun. At our next meeting we are having a Eumig night and will be videoing that as well so keep an eye out!

Keep the 9-5 flag flying.

Hi Lee,
I really enjoyed that video, and I must say the PAX is a very impressive looking machine, much larger than I had imagined it to be, and it certainly seems to perform very well. Who was the chap who did most of the talking? He did a great job, and his enthusiasm for 9.5mm is infectious. So much so that I had to get my 9.5mm gear running after watching this.

Hey Paul it's a Pathe 'VOX' The Pax came a little later in 1950.
Chappy talking is Peter and we’ve been pals for oh so many years, filming, collecting and often seen larking around at film conventions over here. How my wife copes with us both when we are together I will never know.

Great video and I have been wanting to pick up a Vox or Super Vox for ages..I am hoping to maybe bring one back with me after the Group 9.5 50th get-together as no one ever wants to ship them - so tell everyone to bring out the sale items....Oh and was that clip from Harlem Holiday? I have that short but alas no sound projector to play it on. Won't somebody lend a helping hand? Give to the american sound 9.5 fund, and we will send you a personalized photo of the young man you are helping [Big Grin]

Hi Dino. As promised here are a few top tips which might help you when looking for a used, nay antique Vox projector. As you will know there is the standard Vox and the Super Vox and my advice would be to stick to the standard Vox machine. The standard Vox had a chain drive mechanism for the sprockets which over time does stretch, but in a way this is a good thing as it’s a fairly simple job to remove one link from said chain to tighten it up again. Super Vox is all gears and once these wear you will have had it and may struggle to find another machine for spares. I’ve also found the Super seemed to have suffered more from the dreaded metal fatigue known as Mazak. This problem was caused by impurities in the zinc and basically you can watch the whole machine slowly drop to pieces, slightly over emphasised but you get the idea.

The Vox basically came in three heavy parts and I mean heavy, those being mains transformer, machine and the detachable rear sound box which contained the valve amplifier. In my local vicinity we collectively have something like 15 standard Vox machines with collector friends and just about all machines have been upgraded to better lighting and sound improvements. It is not a massive job to remove the old lamp and fit a new lamp holder for a modern QI lamp, but a little more complicated to remove the old amplifier and replace with new transistor pre amp and power amp. Some just remove the old amp, fit a photo diode where the reflector mirror sits and plug that into the photo socket of a spare hi fi amp.

One of my Vox machines is currently in pieces as I have been doing a rebuild on the old girl. Mechanics are complete now so all that is left to do is fit the new purpose built transformer and amplifier but free time often limits this activity as with all of us. The above is a quick overview how to improve a Vox and it is worth carrying out the modernisations to it for a brighter picture and better sound.

Likely things to be worn on a Vox will be the claw and cam, chain drive which we have covered, main two speed gear on the back so check it for play, the two sprockets so look to see if they are down to the brass, lens focus knob and possibly the gate plates.

Good spares for these machines do crop up and once you get a machine its worth keeping a spare claw, cam, spool arms and the 2 speed main gear if you can find them.

Hope this helps in your quest my friend..

Good news! Its time for another of our 9-5 film group meetings and as promised we will be making another little video which no doubt will appear hear. This one will be just that little bit different with even more 9-5 fun and games so stand by for more shenanigans from the dynamic duo.

Frank. If you fit a photo diode in front of the sound drum and feed that into a audio pre amp you will then have a 9-5 sound projector. Some just feed the diode output into a phono (turntable) input on a hi fi amplifier which is a simple way to do it. Remember this is a 110 volt mains machine though Frank.
