Well the first info to report is that there is now a Pathescope VOX in California....

Sunday was the final day of the get together and the best day of the bunch.

It all started around 11am with the opening of the doors to the dealers room..I have moaned many times about how jealous I am of the UK collectors who have the film fairs to go to, and now that I went to this with just a handful of dealers, I am only MORE jealous..So much stuff for sale, completely reasonable prices, and everyone is extremely nice...All I can say is I hope the UK collectors enjoy and appreciate what they have, because I sure did for the one day I experienced it....

The sales went quick, then it was off to the screening room for a presentation of the film Italian Straw Hat on 9.5 w/ a wonderful soundtrack thanks to John Ferrari. The film was introduced by Kevin Brownlow who gave an overview of his life and how 9.5 film has impacted it positively.

After the screening was the auction which was a lot of fun, although this was where most people missed David Erskine, as this was his usual stage. The auction had its ups and downs with some things going quickly for very low or "no" prices and others taking some counter bidding to acquire...The highlights were the battling Graham Sinden did to win the Pathe Europe...I talked to him earlier in the day and he said the only way he would play more 9.5 films is if he got one of the newer projectors like a Europe........I feel like I acquired the diamond in the rough...It was a little pricey at 85 GBP but I bought a "tinted" 9.5 film LOT containing THE 3 X 300FT Arabian Nights (1921)and 5 x 300ft Metropolis (1927)...The key things that made this a diamond in the rough is a)the print has running titles which I believe most Metropolis's do not. b) It is tinted which no one I spoke to at the event said they had ever heard of a tinted Metropolis, and c) this is absolutely the best conditioned 9.5 print I now have in my collection. Whoever owned this print took extremely good care of it over the years. ..

After the auction is was dinner time again.. My wife Sherra and I got to spend dinner Keith and Sue Cockayne who could not have been nicer...Keith is one of my better 9.5 friends and it was great to finally meet face to face...One note if you need any weird little part for a 9.5 projector you should look him up, he is just like Wartin used to be, with spare parts for every machine...

The rest of the group was also as nice as anyone could be, the list of people I finally met face to face and spent time with is numerous, and I can't thank them all enough especially Grahame Newnham, Grahame and Pat Murray and many many others...I got to meet some folks I have communicated with for years like Christopher Bird, or have idolized for years like Ken Valentine.

Group 9.5 is a major inspiration in my life and will continue to be. I may never be able to convince my wife to fly over to the UK again for one of the get togethers, but I hope somehow I can contribute to the group and give back a tiny bit of what I have received from them....

One of the pics is a pile of all the stuff I brought back including the VOX...The key to bringing it back was to take it as my carry on since it weighed 25kg (55 lbs) by itself. Now it is in my home and will be up n running soon I hope....

OK since I have been up for about 24 hours I think it is time to sleep and watch movies later in the week...

Well done Dino! Sounds like you had a great trip. I totally agree with you in envying the UK collecting scene. I have had the same reaction every time I have been to the BFCC, which incidentally you might try to do while it is still around.
Thanks so much for your Harpenden reports, I enjoyed reading all of them. As a matter of fact I think you are the first person to ever post a report on Harpenden on any forum.
Congrats on getting a Pathe Vox to California, we all know it will have a good home. Any problem in getting it through the airport or through customs?

Thanks Dino for all these reports and photos.

I enjoyed the whole festival and was sad when it came to an end as I was having such a great time. To finish with the 'Get together' (as nine fivers call it) was heaven. It was a pleasure to meet you and your wife but it was a slight shame we didnt get more opportunities to talk. Im glad I bought that Pathe Europ but paid slightly more than my limit but I know the seller very well and funny thing was he told me he was thinking of selling it and I showed my interest but I didnt want to be too pushy as I was told by a friend that he had been saying that for years but didnt really want to part with it. It was a total surprise that he bought it to the auction but I really wanted it so I had to bid. At the time I only had one other 9.5 projector, a 200B but didnt want to put any home movies through it as im sure it scratches and the speed goes up and down. Now I have a good 9.5 projector that will keep to speed and will be perfect for my home movies.

Im not really much of a 9.5 collector with only a few prints but may get back into collecting on 9.5 again now I have better equipment.

Anyway the whole holiday was just excellent and cant wait to get that super 8 developed.

Graham
It is a shame we did not get more chatting time together, but I will say that my wife and I got quite a kick out of listening to you and Hugh Hale sort of going at each other on the bus..It was quite funny as you guys seemed like two siblings that were constantly teasing each other....Glad you got the Europe and sorry it went as high as it did...Hope to see you again some time, but probably not next year (TOO BROKE!)

Hi Dino, Ihave just joined this particular Forum but have read posts for quite a time as a guest via a link fro "Cinerdistan". I was at the 50th Get Together and actually saw you purchasing the VOX but realised this prom your photos. Am glad you had a good time. I spend most of the time nattering to old fellow members, many sadly no longer with us. I joined Group 9.5 when it first started, at the demise of Pathescope. Reference your film purchases, "Arabian Nights" and "Metropolis" were issued at the period when running titles had been introduced so were never available with the notched system. Also, all the prints were tinted in places. Both had been withdrawn from the catalogue by around 1946. Quite a few pre war titles had tinting and of course Pathe also issued some early notched 30ft titles using their colour stencil process for 9.5mm as they had for 35mm inthe early days of the cinema.

Glad you enjoyed the event, Dino. I'm just getting over knee op, or would have been there too. Now walking a bit easier, I may even get back to group 9.5 meetings, haven't been since I first joined due to knee issues!

Ken, sorry we didn't get to chat at the event as I was trying to meet as many of the group members as possible. I was also on a high from being in a room filled with nothing but 9.5 materials...I am dying to get the Vox up n running but have a friend working on it to overcome the 50Hz issues...

Thanks for the info regarding the tinted prints. I guess I falsely assumed Metropolis was notched as well due to the other big German releases such as Variete and Caligari...oops!.....

and even more sorry to hear about your knee Allan, I recently tore my bicep (possibly from carrying the VOX) and even something like that makes me appreciate having full mobility, and hope that you can now get back out into action and attend those 9.5 meetings...I can't imagine how much fun it would be to get together and talk film every month.
