A few days ago, I put a feature on a 800 meters reel, as I try to do with all my films when possible. The first third of the film ran perfectly but then the pictures started to jump. I thought it was a bad splice or a damaged perforation (as it was the first third I imagined it was at the reel change) and tried to fix it. I tried many times but unsuccefully and could not see any problem with the film. I then imagined the trouble came from the projector and tried a small section of a silent film but the picture was ok. Before reporting this problem here (in hope to get some advices), I decided to try first another feature, which I did tonight. The good new is that my Buckingham 9,5 is still at the top but the bad one is that I have no idea why my film doesn't want to be projected anymore. Who has an idea ?

The projector is the Buckingham 9,5. That's the only 9,5 sound projector I have, so I cannot test the film on another sound projector. The film is "Rouletabille aviateur", a 1939 print.

I guess Pathé used its own filmstock for its prints, but I never looked at that closely as usually you don't need really need to know when it's black and white. I see no reason why the filmstock would be different from one reel to another on the same film. So, mystery still to solve.

I will ask Tuesday at the 9,5 projection. There is a Holiday now in Belgium, so I will spend three days in Paris. but if someone has an idea about the possible cause of the trouble, I will be happy to read it when I'm back.

This is good advice Dominique, as the film could very easily have stretched sprocket holes from a worn projector previously.

Yes Dominique 9 times out of 10 this is going to be caused by shrunken film, and the Buckingham's are actually known for this since they were modified from projectors designed for modern use..This is where having a Vox comes in handy since they handle the shrunken ones a tad better (but you obviously sacrifice sound and light if not modified)....If you don't have a proper splicer you can line it up alongside some brand new leader to see if the pitch goes off on the sprocket holes.

I will check that. I was asked to bring the film to the next 9,5 projection meeting to try it with the French Club's projector.
