  • video of a 'simple' worm drive replacement?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-fZhTWSzfk

I saw this video on You Tube. It is of a young chap replacing the worm gear on a B & H. It seemed 'simple' in that he was not using any specalised equipment/jigs and just used his intuition. He did have a few screws left over at the end! But it sounded a lot better and was functioning at the end. Is he doing it right, or was it just good luck?

Being a manual load model did save a lot of final adjustment that is necessary if it was an auto-thread model.

I suspect that may be the case Maurice. I'm temped to have a go myself to satisfy my curiosity! I don't remember seeing many manual load only machines, apart from the slot loaders on ebay. Is there a database of manual load machines 1970 - 80(ish) or a few model numbers to look for?

This site has some good information on Bell & Howell sound models.

Martin Davey Awesome video! I don't have a B&H 16mm projector...but I could definitely identify with the feeling of excitement and satisfaction after the repair was complete. This video illustrates the "just-go-for-it" mentality that I subscribe to

Your enthusiasim and excitement is always apparent Janice! I'm wondering what type of worm gear, as it what it is made out of, one would go for. Metal, nylon, 3d print etc?

For use in Bell & Howell 16mm projectors the most accepted material is described as "nylatron", this is the black plastic material.
It is not known if the new 3d printed gears will really stand up to heavy wear.
There are other projectors, not Bell & Howell, that do use a metal worm, mainly brass.
