  • B&H 16mm Filmosound creates loop after "gate" exposure

    Forum,

It's great that 8mmforum has accepted my application. Thank you. Also please forgive any of my incorrect naming of things. The issue at hand is with a Filmosound 2580a projector I bought. It creates a "film loop" or an excess of film spewing out during operation. The location of this loop is at the "loop reset" point. In other words, the film speed is too fast after the "gate". If I put the load lever in position 1 and run the film without the film being engaged by the various mechanisms, it runs fine without creating a growing loop of film under the gate. In position 1 the loop gets created. The audio also gets increasingly out of sync the longer the film is being ran through. What could be causing this difference in speed causing film to unravel at the loop reset point? Thanks.

Thanks, Richard. I see that it is cracked. A very unfortunate location for that gear. What would be the best way to gain access to the lower sprocket gear? From the back or front of the projector? Does this require a complete disassembly to replace this gear?

I believe that the Slot Loader is the only model to use this gear, something to do with an extension from the worm.
            Am I correct, Richard?
            Perhaps you can explain.

I am having trouble getting the transformer unscrewed from the bottom of the housing. The two front 1/4 inch socket screws were removed yesterday but the two holes in the backside of the transformer mount is stuck to what seems to be two screws coming up from the circuit card area. Do I also need to go into the circuit card area? Also it may be helpful If could remove the entire speaker panel but the elevator assemby knob is blocking this from happening. Is there any way to remove the elevator knob? If so I could see what's going on in the back of the transformer by removing the speaker panel. Thanks, Richard.

Edit: I have removed all of the elevator assembly excluding the knob that lowers and raises the projector.

I can see the cracked lower sprocket gear through a hole in the front. It has a crack going from one end of the gear to the hole in the center.

Are you aware that Film Tech have manuals for download? They have a Bell & Howell 1580, 1680 Service Manual. These are Slot Load models, similar to yours. They may not be identical, but should help with dis-assembly and re-assembly.

Richard, the transformer is removed and is sitting to the side.

Maurice, that tech Manuel helped me figure out the elevator knob assembly. Thanks again.

The flywheel seems to be stuck after I removed the retainer clip. I'm not seeing anything in the manuals about replacing the lower sprocket gear. Once I get to the lower sprocket gear I will order a new one from Richards site. If anyone knows the proper next steps to speed this along, it would help.
