  • Castle 16mm Shorts!

I find I'm enjoying Castle 16mm shorts a lot lately. The ones I know are all 400 feet and sound, and black and white. They often involve some kind of sporting event from many decades ago.

I got into these in kind of an odd way: my son has a dual-gauge 8mm machine, so when I found out about Three Bruins in a Canoe in R8 silent, I bought it for him, since we canoe quite often. Lo and Behold I saw it after that in 16mm with sound right around the time I got a 16mm machine, and after that the chase was on!

Some I've snagged in the meantime are Ski-Mania, Calgary Stampede, Daredevils on Ice, Hawaii World Parade and most of the Bruins series.

These seem to be profoundly under-represented on Super-8. One I do have is "Sky Diving" which is sound and black and white. (I'll have to say: even as a pretty big fan of black and white, I wish this particular reel was color!) To my knowledge, the Bruins never made in onto S8 sound: kind of a pity.

Maybe this is some personal interest. My Mom had a job on Park Avenue at the Universal Studios Building where she worked IBM keypunch shipping consignments of Castle films to retailers. Maybe 8 years ago she visited and I showed her a Castle short. She said "That's great! I've never seen one before!". (You would think they'd show a few and keep the Troops enthusiastic, but...)

She left that job when I was born. (Let's hope that this remains the most damaging thing I ever do to small-gauge film!)😊

These films are just neat little shorts that you use like you would a cartoon: just something entertaining to wake the audience up before the feature! These days with that sharp black and white image and vintage ambience, they have a nostalgic look that just feels right.

    -any other enthusiasts?

      Hi Shorty!,

Funny thing with those B&W prints of color films: I have a wonderful 16mm Short titled Sailing Newfoundland Waters, about a crew of seven men aboard a 38 Foot boat circumnavigating the island. I bought it from the Franchettis.

This is a wonderful Black and White print, or at least I thought, until I googled the film and found out it's supposed to be color!

(-kind'a wish I never saw that!)

          16 or 8?

I've had the S8 B&W sound maybe a year now.

(We seem to have pretty similar tastes in film!)

S8...always found that particular title to be very hard in locating, much like "Pioneer Planes & Daredevils", and sure we share a mutual admiration towards the nautical, aviation and rail

This is a pretty recent Castle 400 footer of mine: Glacier National Park

I liked it so much that it came with me to CineSea.

I also liked it so much that Fascinating Yosemite should be here soon too!

Fascinating Yosemite arrived here yesterday and is really great!

(We watched it and agreed we really should go there!)

I have many Castle shorts on 16mm. I like them because they are almost all Universal theatrical shorts. I particularly like the News Parades and some of the specialty shorts.

Quality of Castle shorts varies. The best ones are copies printed in the US. They are usually very good prints with nice contrast and density.

There are also "official" dupes, distributed by companies like "16mm Australia" and "GB Movie Paks" with different start titles. Some of them are often quite dupey and washed-out. I call them official dupes, because it looks like they were made with permission by these companies (I guess using an American release print as source). But then there also might be a few "unofficial" dupes, made by collectors...

I would like to see more colour versions of Castle films. I have seen a few CineColor ones, but they also distributed Kodachrome and AnscoColor prints, which all should still have good colour.

The Castle Films Bible is of course Scott MacGillivray's book CASTLE FILMS: A HOBBYIST'S GUIDE, which lists all films that were ever produced. An amazing reference. And available almost complete on google books...

                    Or in hardcopy from Amazon...

I have several of the GB Movie Packs and also the 16mm Australia Castle shorts, some in original boxes. The quality does vary and I'm certain they were made under licence by the local arm of Gaumont-British film distributors.

MacGillivray's book is a must; we need books like this on other companies too.

I have an aversion to buying books, because in most cases I read them once, and then they just take up space for years.

-for this particular book, I'm going to make an exception!

Hi Steve, I just noticed your post on SAILING NEWFOUNDLAND WATERS. I agree that is a neat short - I have in Kodachrome. My collection is mostly travelogues, WW 2 and COLOR westerns (1940’s and 1950’s).

I would love to see that, Bill! This film really works well in black and white, it gives it a nostalgic feel that goes nicely with people going on a journey by sail, but knowing that there is even more to it makes seeing it more desirable!

I have one more local to you: Michigan Canoe Trails. It's this very early 1950s couple (I call them "Ralph and Alice".) taking a multi-day canoe trip on the Upper Peninsula (-matching flannel shirts and all!). It is in color and shot during the peak of the autumn foliage season: just beautiful! Seeing these things as I do, I'm very taken with this film, but once I showed it to a very general audience and it fell spectacularly flat with them!

It turns out...not everybody canoes! (I would never have guessed this!)

I have this other 16mm 400 footer: Autumn is Spectacular. It is about this sister and brother traveling to Grandma and Grandpa's farm during the Harvest.

-Lots'a talk about the beautiful Fall foliage on the soundtrack of a Black and White print! (What were they THINKING?!!!)

Every so often when I'm in great need of a reel or can, this film's place on my shelves starts to feel a little...endangered!

Hi Steve, Not really interested in parting with this one - however - one of these days I am going to make it to Wildwood (I think you attend this??) and will bring the print for a screening. Lou Franchetti has been after me for years about going - I will make it there. There were many films like this made in the 1950’s and I always enjoy watching them - I guess I am an armchair traveler!!
