  • NOSFERATU wanted

    Dear Collectors
I look for the full silent feature NOSFERATU by the legendary director F.W.Murnau.
I know too less about the different Super-8-versions which had been produced, but maybe someone can help me find out about that. A magnetic soundtrack would be great.
    Thank You for any help.
    Regards
    Oliver

Hello Oliver, I have a 16mm version of this classic film with an optical sound track (music) from blackhawk, they may have done the super 8 version too but not sure it will have a soundtrack. My copy is absolutely in mint as new condition, a doubt it had been through any projector and it is a beautiful print too, i have a super 8 version from perrys movies but that is mute.......

      Hi Paul
      This is very interesting.
So there are really mute and sound prints around.

A mute complete version exists with titles and intertitles in French, so no doubt it must exist in English, as well https://www.bd-cine.com/fiche.php?id=13059

There is a scored Blackhawk version around, don't have it myself otherwise I'd ship to you on-the-house...There is also a Griggs-Moviedrome edition in Std 8 replete with Original titles. etc...silent of course...Cheers, Shorty

                Oliver,

there was a German release as well of what is called the "full-length version" of "Nosferatu": Edited by Atlas-Film, Duisburg. It was the version re-released in the 1960's with new German inter-titles, available on 4x400' (64 mins) in a scored version with magnetic track (music by Peter Schirmann) as well as in a cheaper edition without magnetic striping.
I had this once; don't understand today how I could sell it back then...

Oliver. Collectors club did a very nice std 8 feature which I.mag striped in the 70s adding a sound track.
Later they did a super 8 which was a soft view, actually blown up from std 8 at the time. Collectors here always seek out the std 8 in preference.

The recent Blu Ray is a good stop gap until you find a film print. The British Film Institute disc did it justice

                      Dear collector friends

I found a NOSFERATU print last week and it arrived yesterday. It’s a mute Blackhawk print (mute doesn’t matter, I use the soundtrack by CD) and in quite good shape.
But the story starts later than the original film. When „Jonathan“ (Hutter) arrives at the inn in Transylvania. Are all the prints the same or are there more complete versions?
Eberhard mentioned a full-length release from Germany in the 60s. The hunt goes on.

                      Regards
                      Oliver

Oliver, the Collectors Club version on standard 8mm was released on 6x200' reels. And as Lee pointed out above, avoid the Super 8 release from Collectors Club because it is too soft looking while the standard 8 version is quite sharp. I believe the Collectors Club was the same version as the Blackhawk version. I'm not sure but I believe both versions were slightly abridged. But I believe both of those releases were the longest issued and fit nicely on 3x400' reels. Somebody here will know for sure though. Phil at Classic Home Cinema in the UK often has a print of this title for sale, which is where I got mine a couple of years ago.

And no, the film absolutely does not start at the inn in Transylvania!
