Osi, i must ask this question, what is it about this film you like so much? Im guessing two things here, Olivia Newton John and the music by ELO. The film was one of the biggest flops of the time.
I'm very curious,Last edited by John Taylor; November 07, 2023, 02:30 PM.

You nailed it on the head! A really big fan of ELO, Olivia was at her hottest! Super 8 AND ELO! I didn't like the "video" part of this in this digest, and it sadly didn't have Gene Kelly's dance number, "Whenever Your Away From Me", but it was a nice cutdown of a largely lousy movie, but by today's standards, is more than passable. My wife also likes this film, another plus, as we know how little our ladies, our "better halfs", don't understand why we would spend so much on so little.

I can see how an awful film can be cut down to make a fairly good half hour or so, I must look into this digest,
Reading a bit about this movie, it appears that due to it's poor performance at the box office, soon after it's release it was used as double feature with another musical released previously, cant stop the music and this double bill inspired John J B Wilson to create the Golden Raspberry awards (or Razzies), an annual event to recognise the worst in cinema for a given year.
I know there is a version of Cant stop the music on super 8, 400ft if i recall, as a friend of mine showed it to me some years ago, I have to say, I wish I hadn't seen it, I cant un-see it, my mind has been disturbed for years to come. 🤣🤣🤣.

The irony is that the soundtrack boasts 3 number 1# hits, as well as a few other hits, not hitting number 1#. I think that part of the issue is that the film is too old school corny musical. ( Those who love old school corny musicals , please don't be offended ). What I mean is that old-school musicals have tended to center most of they're creative energies on the musical, but very little on the story. The story just tends to be a flimsy framework to hang the musical numbers on. That's Xanadu in a nutshell. Now, " Can't Stop The Music" in my opinion, is a complete waste of good celluloid. Old-school musicals played well in the 30's, 40's and 50's. When the 60's swung in, the mood of the world in general was becoming more serious and dark. People were not into "bubble gum" entertainment. The musicals that survived, had to be "edgier", so to speak, or have a relevant message. Xanadu didn't have any scocio-political agenda. It's basically, " Hey, C'mon! Let's put on a show!"

Xanadu. Still an awful movie in digest form and otherwise which looked like it had been filmed with Vaseline on the lens. Basically finished Michael Beck and Olivia Newton John’s film careers. Least Gene Kelly got a last pay cheque for doing very little. I sort of vaguely remember Can’t Stop the Music promo. Is Village People YMCA included? I have memories of Derek Simmonds and Mike Dimmock doing the arm movements at a showing.

If the U8 version had at least got a sharp image like most of their releases perhaps it may have been ok.
Cant stop the music was an equal embarrassment to sit through. Steve Guttenberg wearing a crop top and shorts along with the script was bad for the eyes and ears. As for the big YMCA number, a load of blokes doing acrobatics in a gym, half of it in slow motion, jeepers, had they have used the well known music video in there, it may well have been fun but this was clearly a most odd addition to the already weak storyline. It was a time when the groups popularity was at a peak so like as is often the case, it was a quick film to cash in, unfortunately, it flopped. The comical thing is, someone high up and well paid in the studios actually gave these films the go ahead.
Just to get back on track of this thread though, the two films together probably made the ideal flop double feature.
Osi, good luck in your hunt. Do you also want to find a copy of Cant stop the music to go with it? 🤣🤣🤣Last edited by John Taylor; November 11, 2023, 06:28 AM.

John, the only way I'd ever accept "Can't Stop The Music", is if someone sent it to me, for free, and then I'd immediately sell it on, on ebay, (if anyone actually wanted it!)! I honestly don't know as to how many Red Fox films LPP prints were struck. I'd assume, not too many. As I had stated before, the Kodak SP print I currently have is OK for the moment, but I am putting off doing a Stereo re-record until after I find the LPP copy. The mono soundtrack on this Universal 8 release was actually pretty good. With the right projector, ( Eumig 926 stereo, for instance), and some nice speakers, it's not half bad!
