  • Chinon 2500 GL questions and issues....

Hello I am new to the board and am sorry if these have been answered before. I did find the archive and some were posted but for some reason I am unable to send messages to the very users who have the same problems / questions that I do.

Anyway, I just purchases a like new Chinon 2500 GL from eBay. It runs great and it is quiet which I like. But I have these questions....

    1) Sometimes, when engaging the F (forward) setting the unit hums but will not pull film through. Backing it off to R (reverse) and then back to F fixes the issue every time. It was posted and suggested a while back that the rubber belt might need to be changed. Thoughts?
    2) Are there any diagrams on where to lubricate this unit once I pull the back off?
    3) What is the trick to get the lens out? I pull it straight out away from the gate and it just stops. It's as if it is the furthest out while adjusting the zoom. What am I missing on this?
    4) The auto take up reel doesn't work very well. The film tends to curl up in front of the reel rather than following the contour on the backside and then 'grabbing' the reel. I have to stop operation and manually wrap it around the reel then turn it back on to F. Oftentimes it won't come on (see 1) above) then I have to move it to R then back F.

Also, general feedback on FilmGuard? I would like to lubricate my film letting it pass between folds of lens tissues or similar. Thoughts on application? Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry but I don't know this model. I see it's a dual gauge projector. Make sure that the selecor switch matches the type of film you are threading.
Here is a link to its User Manual which I hope will be of use.

Maurice - thanks. I have the manual. Settings are correct and instructions on lens followed. It just won't come out. I don't want to force anything. Ulitmately I am trying to get a better angle on the film gate to clean that out. Plus cleaning off the lens.

It's been awhile since I had a GL2500...but as far as removing the lens...try pulling out on the focus knob the pull and turn the lens barrel. Some lenses screw out. The GL2500 is a nice little projector... but the loop setter can be a problem. When not threading properly push down on the blue button at the top..try F or R to see if that restores the loop. Takeup reels often don't catch automatically and you have to manually thread the reel...and again you maybe have to hit the blue loop restorer.

Janice - thanks. i have read some of your posts in the archive. I like the projector. Okay I pulled on it and then I also pulled on the focus lever and it came out a bit and AT THAT POINT the lens slides out NOWHERE in the instructions did it say to pull out on the knob. Thanks.

Now, any ideas about on items 1) and 2) above? I read in an archive post that the 'forward engagement' issue may be an issue with the rubber belt which is easily replaced. I have ordered one.

And, any thoughts on FilmGaurd for lubricating the film?

          Thanks for your input!!!

Sounds like the motor belt is stretched and loose...replacing the belt should solve that problem. Most projectors have life-time lubrication...however if you find grease on the gears that has hardened...you can remove the old grease with 91% alcohol and replace with white lithium grease or SuperLube. I clean my films with alcohol, but there are many others on the forum who can attest to the use of FilmGuard.

Thanks Janice. p.s. I am also looking at the Sankyo 1000 Dual 8 as a possibility - I do like my Chinon 2500 GL though.....

Philip...If you are looking at a Sankyo...I recommend the Sankyo 2500 over the 1000. It has a newer and less expensive halogen bulb over the old expensive spaceman type bulb. It also has some design improvements over the 1000.

do you mean the Sankyo 2000? Also, I can tell the belt is slipping on the FORWARD engagement issue so the when the replacement belt gets here that should fix that!! Thanks.

Is there any specific trick to replacing a motor belt on the Chinon 2500 GL ? I can't seem to find a video or 'how to' on this although lots of examples with other projectors. Any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

I don't exactly remember... but this has worked on other projectors of this type. Try first attaching the belt to the lower small pulley. Then placing the belt onto the upper large pulley ... keep pushing up turning the pulley while holding the belt securely in the grove. It should feed all away around to the back of the pulley.

Janice - yes that worked very easily. Strange. I took the 'old' belt off and it doesn't really look stretched, old, or stiff.

The new belt works fine of course - BUT the problem still exists with F-FORWARD engagement - at times. It will not engage the motor - but flipping to R-REVERSE then back fixes that issue 100% of the time.

So....I don't think it was the belt. Seemed logical. But something else is going on.

You might want to add a few drops of light machine oil to the motor.

I took the back off. The motor and belt are spinning the but shaft with the shutter flanges on it next to the big wheel is not. If I give it a shove with my finger it starts projecting. So it is that shaft - not the belt and that is what I need to lubricate. It doesn't take much of a push to unstick it. Going to REVERSE-R and then back to FORWARD-F always unsticks it. Thanks.

UPDATE: The belt is slipping around that large white wheel. So I took a Q tip and alcohol and cleaned it off. I hope that is ok. My thinking is that is was dirty and causing slippage. I have tested it it now and so far I can't get it to hang. I will keep testing this usually on about the 4th engagement to F is slips. But not right now.....Should the belt be cleaned with anything?
UPDATE2: Tried it again. Slipping is back. Hmmmm.
