  • Perma Film (Permafilm) to protect film by coating? what is the result?

    Hi all,

This can be in 16mm or 8mm forum but I prefer to drop here where I visit most.

So I found a sticker below in one of my film can and say it has been protected for long film life by Permafilm Australia.

I googled it and found this article:

and I also found the same product (may be different formula) is still available in the market, but now more is advertised to protect car paint.

So during the 1970s have you ever heard this treatment to film meaning the film is coated by transparent solution. And was it effective to protect film from scratch or vinegar syndrome.

    cheers,

Those gentlemen seem to doubt of the efficiency of this product but maybe someone has better informations : "Perma Film. The Safe Film Preserver." - NitrateVille.com

      Yes
      I have seen these stickers.
I think film libraries used the service to prolong the life of their prints.

I actually thought this product was to prevent corrosion in cars and other similar products not a film preservative.

Back in the 1970's I used a small bottle of PERMA-FILM sold in a nearby photo store to treat home movie footage I had shot. I can't really say it did anything more that be a good cleaner and film lubricant although it supposedly helped keep your film from getting scratched easily. I never saw it for sale again once I had used it up...

A good cleaner and lubricator of films that stuttered in projection. I think it may have had some reduction in visibility of scratches when first applied, but not long term.

Same with Vaporate...no scratches or "jumps", long-term lubricant...and importantly, no deteriorative odor...in the long run...Cheers, Shorty. but I keep baking soda handy, just to be sure
