I'm a little fascinated by the "AC or DC" part. I'll admit I forgot a lot of what I learned in high school about electric motors (-if you don't use it...Oh! -the things I've forgotten!), but to me a motor that could operate on AC or DC would be a DC (brushed) motor with a rectifier in front of it.
I know they had some kind of solid-state rectifiers before germanium/silicon diodes late 1950s/early 1960s, but how did they do this in 1939?
(I suppose I could take my own Keystone apart, but it's probably simpler to just ask...)
