  • Super 8mm Film Services in Italy

For the past several months I have engaged film services in Italy to produce multiple Super 8mm digests for me. Since I have now received them I wanted to provide an update for everyone on the forum about these super 8mm services!!

I couldn't be happier with the final result and for my purposes these prints are just fine. The most important thing I can say is the price is very reasonable and includes striping (dual track) and recording to your film. The images are nice and have excellent color. For the home enthusiast and collector I would strongly recommend that you look into these services if you would like your own super 8mm print of a digest you have dreamed of having. Edit it yourself - send them the file!

I decided that I wanted 5 more prints in addition to the 200' JAWS print I received a long while ago. They did such a great job on JAWS that I wanted to see what this company would do with the additional edits I have done. All edits used high definition resources and from that I provided MP4 files. They use a process to print directly from a 2K image onto Super 8mm stock.

They created this work flow process over a period of about 4 years - as I understand - and much of the equipment has been customized to produce these super 8mm prints. It's nice to know that we collectors have options when choosing who to produce our new features and digests.

Here are some images from the most recent prints - actual projection looks much sharper and improved so I apologize for the quality of these images from my iphone :

That screenshot from "Jason" is outstanding! I have been dealing with them for a good while and am awaiting my prints to be delivered this Friday. Though some nit pick on these not being quite as sharp as an Andec, these new prints are certainly sharper than most of what has been available to collectors in decades. I am personally awaiting a digest that I have carefully edited, that was a dream digest that never existed, until now, AND in scope and stereo, no less! It was a 35 year wait for this, and it is MY edit!

Printing directly to film rather than creating a negative master must reduce the cost significantly. I did not see a price list on the web site. Is that determined by the size of he order?

This process is a real game changer.

It is 7 euro per minute. Now, that seven euro includes the cost of mag striping, as well the recording of the film, so yes, that seven euro per minute price tag is truly a winner! They do professional work!

The great thing about this company, as Phillip already mentioned, if you have a specific project that, quite frankly, would only be of interest to you and wouldn't be considered a moneymaker, this is where to go, as, where years ago, this wouldn't even be an option, it is now a reality, and can be done with quality.

Fascinating. Are these the same people who provide replacement 16mm segments for damaged prints?

And are they associated with the people who do the striping and recording for other new releases, or is this someone else?

              Just curious!

Interesting, and so much cheaper than current new releases.

Having owned and presently owning both new Andec releases and this new fellows releases, I personally believe that this new fellow has the opportunity to actually get the most out of his process, as, with a negative, as in Andec, there is not much that can be done but print from an existing negative. With this new process, this person can have control over the whole process, from beginning to end, editing and adjusting contrast, sharpness, color tint ect ect and then going straight to the print stock. This Kodak Vision stock is the same for both Andec and this Gentleman, and owning both the Andec 600ft digest, and the 200ft from this Gentleman of JAWS, I can honestly say that the color saturation and grading is better with this Gentleman. It really gives this Kodak Vision stock it's best showing.

I thought I'd bring back up this post, as it has a few shots from this new Curse of Frankenstein digest. However, as has been stated, these new prints will come from Andec, but a comparison would be worthwhile.

Well, the person who does these needs the file to be in the PAL format, 29 fps and a 1080p resolution, and can make it either a scope or letterboxed widescreen flat format, but his letterboxed prints are truly exceptional.

PAL is an analogue system (Phase Alternate Line) not a Digital one the only digital version would be on D3 composite tapes. It is normally 50fields/second, 575 active lines so I don't understand why he would want that format.
