  • Scene changes in 8mm home movies -- finding? Fixes ?

I am in the process of converting to digital my 70's and 80's home sound movies and after several false starts have a modified projector and Digital Movie camera in use that woeks very well.

I have become annoyed with a fault my old S8mm camera seems to have added. That is when I stopped filming, and then restarted, the film/camera captures the cameras restart actions. That is the first view of the new scene is dark, the next light, the next dark and the rest of the new scene at the proper exposure... also there is a bit of sound(noise) recorded on the audio track of these scenes that wasn't in the scene....

So, I am thinking why not just remove those re-start scenes(frames). However, I was wondering if any one had any other thoughts? Don't think I want a transition...

Also, is there a easy way to have software do this? or maybe search for scene changes for me (automate the process a bit) ( snip and trim) --

(fyi -- I have AVI-Video Editor and Magix Movie Edit Pro --- but I am willing to try another

    Thanks for any thoughts

    Chuck

You can't go wrong with Davinci Resolve. I believe they have a free version that omits some of the stuff you would likely not need anyway.

Hi I also use Magix edit Pro. It automatically detects scenes. It's not a problem, just switch it of on the program. I'm using cine cap and do my films frame by frame. I do up to 6 passes of the same film at different f stops. One extreme to the other. Simply put them on your time line afterwards and edit between the clips. The results are perfect frame accurate shot to shot exposure.

That‘s not a bug. That‘s a feature. As the sound is recorded on the mag stripe 18 frames before the corresponding image, it was later difficult to properly edit the film. Hence, many sound cameras had such a „delay image recording“-feature.

Well… at least the Nizo 4056 did it the other way around:
when this switch is at the „0.2 sec“ setting, then the sound recording is started nearly immediately (with a minor gap so that the „noice“ at start isn’t recorded). At „1 sec“, the camera starts to record images, delaying the sound recording by one second…
