  • Automatic postprocessing after transfer

    Dear all,

I have bought a Reflecta normal 8 super 8 scanner to rescan about 100 normal 8 and super 8 movies.
The originals vary widely in age (1940-1988) ranging from very grainy black and whites, and color films that have turned completely blue - to some decent black and white and color movies.
The output is clearly far from professional quality, but still *much* better then the scan that I received form a service 20 years ago.
At the same time I would like to improve it further by (at least mostly) automated post processing, as I neither have the skills, tools, or time to do heavy editing by hand myself. Would anyone have a recommendation on what program to use (on a PC)?
I am looking to remove noise, scratches, improve clarity and definition, color balance, possibly stabilize.

    Thank you,
    Istvan

If you're not into scripting ie AVISynth, for noise reduction, it's hard to beat Neat Video. It is a plugin for the popular video editors and also Virtual Dub. It is very good at removing grainy, staticy noise as well as dust and scratches. It will largely neutralise mild cine flicker.

      Hi!

Of course, NeatVideo is the best solution.
But on windows, you can also try „Film9“:
      https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/...m%29-and-video
It isn’t updated anymore, but it’s free.

When you don’t have a proper video editing program yet, give the free version of DaVinci Resolve a try: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/de/...avinciresolve/
It allows color correction (including some „auto modes“), … and would accept NeatVideo as a plug-in.

        Hi there,

I recently bought a Reflecta scanner for normal and Super8 and get increasingly excited about the results (though they differ in quality). Sometimes the scanner seems to suffer from "hiccups" and the rhythm of 2 f/s is disturbed, maybe caused by slight dust accumulation (?).
Post processing however is a must, for example to get rid of shakiness and some odd colouring. I am very enthusiastic about Film9 (mentioned in the post above), as it appears to do all jobs required. I do somethimes use NeatVideo which is also great, but requires a bit more tweaking to get the right end results (and misses some of the features of Film9 - but offers others).

PS - I do use further video editing software (Filmora) to optimise the endresult.

Some of my old films suffered badly from mold and I could not find a good solution on the Internet for removing it (other than expensive external services). By some coincidence I found out that a regular mold remover for joints in bathrooms etc. (Cillit Bang) does the job perfectly (cleaning with a regular film cleaner afterwards is a must!). Maybe not a professional solution and perhaps it damages the film in the longer run (?), but it was already damaged and now I can digitize it without any mold spots👍. Maybe others can benefit from this tip.
