  • 9-11

I forgot to list this yesterday. No politics, just where were you? I was on my way to class, in college at the time. Where there would be a lot of noise usually, it was strangely quiet. I walked up to one of my friends, and as I was asking him what's up, I noticed every one staring at the flat screen monitors. I stared too.

Frighteningly, today I was reminded that exactly 10 years after that Derann had its closing down Open Day sale on their last day of trading. In American terms 9-11-11!
Of course the former shocked me more - I remember seeing the second plane going into the tower on TV also the first collapsing but now ever time I think of Derann closing I will be reminded of the US tragedy too

My story isn't a great one.

I was at work (-back when work actually involved going...) about 45 miles away from the Trade Center. We knew a plane had hit a tower, and I thought of back when an Army Air Corps bomber blundered in the fog into the Empire State Building: just an accident. Then the Internet literally stopped (overloaded, plus all the fiber optic lines passing under the towers were severed.) We had a TV in a conference room connected to a VCR for training. Someone borrowed a spool of wire from Engineering stock and jury-rigged an antenna, and we finally had a window out into the World. Then we heard about the second plane and it wasn't an accident anymore. That afternoon people of many Faiths gathered in the cafeteria and we prayed together. After that we called it a day and went home to our families.

I went to donate blood: there were so many they were turning people away.

My Boss was on a flight to San Diego that morning. They were forced down in Indianapolis. He rented a car and drove 800 Miles home.

Our bridges and tunnels to New York City were closed for a while, other than the Connecticut ferries we were now isolated from everywhere else.

Maybe a week later I was out in my yard and saw an airliner up in the sky. Despite having been on well over a hundred flights by then, I felt a chill of fear.

(It was like being trapped in a Tom Clancy novel!)

The real story is my parents: they were in the UK.

They'd befriended an English couple through the Masons and traveled over for a two week visit with them. Their flight home was supposed to be September 14th, but that flight now was gone along with many thousands of others. The other couple had this very primitive E-mail service without real internet access, so I had to work their new travel arrangements from here and transcribe them into E-mails so they could write the information down on their end. We got them home maybe 5 days late, and felt lucky to pull it off.

Dad told me that in the days that followed, American flags started springing up all over the village, and people there did their best to support them in any way they could.

What really makes me sorrowful, is the people today, (largely unreported on, which I personally think is a good idea, draw as little attention to them as possible), desecrating 9-11 monuments across the country. I think, in a manner of speaking, that we thought we were untouchable in regard to these kind of terrorist actions. As of 9-11, that became history.

My wife and I were in New York during July that year, and I took a few shots of the towers on Super 8 Kadachrome.I do wonder if these were the last home movie shots ever taken of this subject.

That's an interesting question, I am betting that nearly any tourists would take some shots of the towers, but probably not that late ... on super 8!

That's interesting: I was actually in the Trade Center plaza carrying a Super-8 camera maybe a month before the attack. We were going over to New Jersey and changed trains there, and came up into the plaza for a couple of minutes.

-thing is: I wanted to film a light rail line over in New Jersey, so the camera stayed in the case!

I have the Panorama International travelogue of New York City and the Trade Center is shown prominently. It looks different to modern eyes.

Truly terrible and aweful day that was.

I came in from the motorbike and saw the TV on after one plane had hit, then saw the 2nd and thought Christ Almighty realising what we were seeing.

I honestly thought in the chaos, it would be W W 3 within a week.

James Blunt the singer saved us from that in 1999 just two years earlier.

We must of all felt a shudder of absolute horror when the towers came down, first one, then the other.

And so many poor souls died and suffered in the following years from the Asbestos etc too.

Can`t believe its 20 Years. Thoughts too all those poor people and families.

                    Best Mark.

PS not being political at all here but we should also remember what the Iraqi`s and Afghan`s lost from this as well. Much more sadly.
