That sounds a great idea to shoot some Super8 Ali. I myself would like to get back into Super8 film a bit more, but find its to expensive for me these days. However I just noticed this morning a link that came through my Facebook page, of a Super8 film competition coming up on "Super8 tv" Facebook page. I think its being held in Germany, so it shows there are still dedicated followers of this gauge out there. It was interesting to note, Super8 films that are being submitted, are being projected using a film projector, not digital copies of Super 8 films, which is nice to hear.

Hope you get a chance to do a sailing on the Waverley soon

Well Graham, I hope to finally get on The Waverley this summer and to use my first trip on it to reconnoitre the route so as to be able to almost 'pre-edit' in my mind exactly how I want to shoot the same trip the second time around - given the high cost of Super8 filming these days!

Back in the day I would be loaded up with at least 10 cartridges of film when it was only about £5 per 50' film including developing, and only about £8 if it was a sound cartridge! 😯😉

Ah well.... those were the days! 😊

Ali what camera will you be using? there are some models that wont register the new film stock properly for exposure. If you are not sure, I would highly recommend on getting advice from the Admin person on "Super 8" Facebook page, he is from Spain and really knows his stuff, regarding shooting Super8, In fact "Kodak" got him along with a few others to test out the new film stock. The results he shared was very impressive, but he is far more knowledgeable on the subject of Super 8 cameras and present film stocks than anyone else I can think of, a great guy to communicate with and totally dedicated to Super 8 film.

I still have one roll of 64T left so I am still thinking of trying to do something special with it in shooting Scope.however
the film to use these days would be Ektachrome 100D.

Graham - I have a Sankyo 620XL which is still in good working order (although I haven't shot any film for about 30 years now!) I also picked up a beautiful Beaulieu 1008XL which I picked-up a year or so ago that is in good working order too.

Back in the day I used to shoot Kodak but I'm completely out of touch with film stock these days so will definitely get some advice from that guy - many thanks 👍

Going forward, and as I eventually get to visit and explore as many of the 22 Isles up here, it would be nice to be able to shoot say 3 cartridges of 50' of each Isle I do get to visit so as to make a wee 10min travelogue film of each one.

I'm hoping to start my 'Munro-Bagging' later this week with a neighbor in the downstairs flat who has emigrated the other way to you - he's moved from Dunedin to Bute!

We're going to tackle a couple of Munros in Glencoe first and for obvious reasons I couldn't film with Super8 for that - but we will be using a GoPro to capture our 'bagging' 🙂

Fantastic Ali all the best with your trips I guess "Ben Nevis" would be on your list to get to the top of. Although getting the right weather for that one is a must .

Hi Graham. I did Ben Nevis back in 2009 a day after finishing the week long trek for the West Highland Way starting off from Milngavie and ending up at Fort William via Rannoch Moor.

I will look to do again at some point. The guide gives an ascent time of between 4-4.5hrs and back in 2009 I made it up in 2.5hrs. If I had been familiar with the route and didn't have to wade through so many people just slowly trekking their way up Nevis, I'm sure I could have broken the 2hr mark - although I was 46 at the time, I was in pretty good shape back then 😉

Well I guess Ali is busy climbing around the west Scotland at the moment there are certainly some beautiful places to go to. After posting about "The Sand Pebbles" in the blu-ray topic it also reminded me of the old La Scala cinema where I watched it where we lived from 1964 until I headed to NZ in 1973. There are only a few films that we watched there, that have stuck in my memory of the "La Scala", Zulu being one, The Great Escape, and of coarse The Sand Pebbles.

Dunoon on the Clyde coast was a great place to live during the 1960s. The town was always full of life in the summer months. I came across this second photo that would have been taken during the 1960s and "away" in the distance on the far away hill is "DGS" Dunoon Grammar School where I went to from the age of 13 to 15 years A three years secondary education is all I qualified for, after that you were out in the big world .

Anyway those following photos of the town really does sum up the feeling and look of the place long long ago.

The La Scala is in the first one

In the early 60's our family, my mother being a Scot, used to spend our summer holidays in Scotland staying with my maternal grandparents who lived in Helensburgh. On occasion we would take the steamer (from memory the Talisman) from Craigendoran across to Dunoon to visit my great Aunt and family who lived in Kirn. Although I served at sea for a sizeable proportion of my career these were the only times I felt really queasy - obviously had not grown my sea-legs yet.
This thread has brought back quite a few memories.

Come on "just" jump ha ha..... that's what we used to say if folk if they "hesitated" going up the gangplank at low tide, here is a marvellous photo taken at Dunoon pier 2017 by the Waverley heritage society.

Plus a couple of others of the past goings on, on the Clyde.

There is one Ealing film however called "The Maggie" a amusing fictional film story, about a puffer and crew that were once a common sight on the Clyde and the West Coast.

from one of my 35mm slides, you used to be able to buy sets like this long ago. This would have been taken during 1960s summers at Dunoon, note the police Hillman Imp. .

One of the great things of the internet is keeping up with with news, lately I have been watching the "Waverley" down in London. Her time in London and the South of England in general has been a huge success, and is now heading the 830 nautical miles back to Glasgow.

One such video was of her arrival on the Thames and sailing under Tower Bridge which I think was well done.

This is what the internet is all about folks, final sailing on the Clyde for 2022. I tell people here, that if you go to to the UK for a holiday, and just happen to visit Scotland , a trip on the "Waverley" is a must.

Video blocked by YouTube (copyright?) for users in the US. If you have a VPN, connect from Auckland, New Zealand to view the video. I expect any Commonwealth countries would have access.

That's a shame Ed I wonder if it was to do with the music he added?

Anyway no problem with ours taken during a visit way back in 1992
