I seem to think that the dvd version of "When The Lion Roars" is only available as a region 1 disc for the States, so really puts the scuppers on most of us in the region 2 UK who don't have multi region players. The other thing is..... the disc is also very expensive.
I was lucky enough to see this series when I visited Canada years ago. My uncle also gave me a "recorded from the TV" video copy which I still have. It is in the NTSC format but, luckily, I have a good quality video player that can change the signal to PAL. I have since made a copy to dvd. The picture quality was always "average video" standard and the sound was mushy mono. But in addition to this, the transfer from NTSC to PAL also results in several lines of interference at the bottom of the screen which can be off putting. The net result is that it is hard work to watch it... but not impossible.

Multi region players are quite reasonably priced these days so worth investing in one. It gives you choice for rare titles and there can be wide differences in price. Might be best to go for multi region Blu Ray that also plays all dvd regions. Sony are a good buy see attached
Apparently, footage of Fred Astaire was removed from the series for the DVD release, for legal reasons.
Yes the "legal reasons" were Fred's money grubbing wife who took full control of his estate when he died. Apparently the cash was more important to her than Fred's iconic legacy at MGM.
I made a documentary series called HOLLYWOOD SINGING AND DANCING. Fred Astaire’s widow wouldn’t give us rights to include him. So sad and wrong. But we used the PD film Royal Wedding dancing on the ceiling despite her.
