Last week was very fortunate to be able to put together and most likely, being the first time in a very long while "2010 The Year We Made Contact" What was even more special, this was the same print that we watched at the cinema when the film was released back in the 80s.

The print itself was in very good condition, those scratch marks you see are coming through from the light box and not the print. Yvonne and I, both watched this one, as it was a film we both enjoyed when it did the cinema run long long ago.

By the way if you know the film, remember the scene outside the white house, if you look over to the far left, you will see someone on a park bench feeding the birds, well that's the man himself, Arthur C. Clark.

Considering its age, its in very good condition I notice the print is "Fujicolor" but like any space films, its really important to see the blacks are still looking very much black, which they still are The sound quality of this print is excellent. With the "air braking" scene the sub works really well I am not sure what they had back in the 80s sound wise in the cinema, but am pretty sure the Kelmar reverse scanning IR that I/we use these days, really boosts the quality of the sound I guess compared to how things were back then.

Well last night I could not help myself, just had to sit back with a glass of wine and screen it again. This time here are a couple of screen shots.

Yesterday Sunday night, its a long one to screen non-stop, for just over 3hrs. The Ernemann 2 and platter ran perfect. Its great to be able to just sit back and enjoy.

Well folks its still sitting on a platter deck from last Sunday night mmmmmmm I wonder, might just give it another screening fairly soon, while Yvonne is watching her usual stuff on TV. Here is a wee blast from an earlier one in 2017, that included a short extract of "Dances With Wolves"

Moderator's Note: Graham had requested to combine two separate threads of his into one. I tried and failed miserably. Merging the "Film Night" thread into this one resulted in something very similar to what happened in "The Fly". This thread is now a hybrid creature with some posts (#14.1 - 14.7) out of chronological order. And also the left arm of an insect.....
It's obvious that Man was not meant to meddle with such things. And by Man I mean me.

Now this film is a real edge of the seat stuff, and in a way, its a tribute to all those who have served in the dangerous job of bomb disposal from all nations.

Graham, I always enjoy reading your 35mm blogs. Just how many titles do you have and how do you store it all? Any interesting stories about how you acquired them?

Hi Dave

In truth I don't keep most of titles, only the ones that are to me special, and are worth the time and effort to put together and screen every so often. Most of them do go elsewhere, the one thing about 35mm, is that it does take up a lot of room, so I have to careful, as what to keep, and what has to go.

To me its not just the film, its also the thrill of running the old "Ernemann 2" projector. To watch and hear a machine that is almost 100 years old is a lot of fun Although in time, all this projection stuff will be gone, but in the meantime is to enjoy it while we can

Sunday morning, and just after giving the projector a clean down and some TLC, something that I do after every screening

Two night ago we screened this 35mm film, also at the cinema way way back in March 2008. Its hard to take in, its now been almost 12 years since it came out, where does the time go? Both picture and Dolby Digital 5:1 sound in particular is stunning. I never get the in depth sound quality from a DVD or Blu-ray through the same amp. The film print multi-channel input to the amp, is light years ahead of any blu-ray. When you listen to the sound coming out of all the surrounds etc its really something

Its been three years since I last watched Sarah's Key. The actual film is still on 6000ft reels, so in the coming months it will get another screening. Its one of those films, that suits the 35mm format for watching. Anyway here is a quick short shaky video capture of the last time I did screen it.
