  • ELC-5 Bulb

I have one of these and was told not to use it in my GS are these for 16mm units I bought it before I got my GS so it must be for a 16mm unit but not sure which one its 25v 250W anyone know what unit these are safely used in?

This is a long life version of the standard ELC lamp whish runs at 250 watts and 25 volts.
It is not suitable for the GS-1200 Super 8 projectors.

So mainly, if not entirely, used in 16mm projectors.

Since the demise of the original 24V 200W ESC bulb for the Elmo GS1200 the choice for most GS owners has been to use the 24v 200w EJL lamp. This is a lamp designed for 16mm projectors and it is noticably dimmer than the original ESC lamp. Some of us however have switched to using the 24v 250w ELC lamp in the GS1200, using an external 24v power supply, and with the ELC moved back by 10mm from the original ESC lamp position. The result is an extremely bright and evenly illuminated picture, even brighter than the original ESC, which makes the EJL look very dim in comparison.

Thanks for that input Paul so I would need an external power supply if I decide to use the ELC bulb ?

Absolutely Jim, for several reasons. First, just plugging the 24v 250w ELC lamp into the GS1200 will result in a 25% increase in the secondary current of the transformer, which will result in an increase of heating of the transformer by 56%. This could dramatically shorten the life of the transformer to say the least. The opposite happens when you drive the lamp alone through an external 24v power supply, which results in zero load on the lamp circuit of the projector, This makes the projector transformer run really cool, just coasting along providing just low level current to the motors and the electronics. The other thing to note is that even if you got by (for a while) not using an external PS, the GS's transformer cannot deliver 250w at 24v and you might only get 21 or 22v on the ELC lamp, thus losing most of the potential gain in light output.

Foster Films, here in the UK, can supply the correct ESC lamps.

Thanks for the link Maurice I am getting a few better safe than sorry.
Paul can EJL's be used safely or stick with OEM ?

Jim, EJL lamps work fine in the GS1200 because they are exactly the same voltage and wattage as the original Elmo ESC lamp. But they are not as bright because the EJL filament is not as compactly wound as the ESC. So the rating for lamp brightness in the GS1200 (lowest to highest) is EJL, ESC. ELC with external power supply). Of course I am not including the Xenpow HID lamps or HTI lamps in this discussion, just the incandescent Halogen lamps.
