I very recently watched a programme on old fashioned tv explaining the tremendous amount of electricity required and water for cooling the servers use to enable the internet and data storage to work. Frankly, from seeing what my grandchildren are watching on the Disney and some of the other children’s streaming services they are mostly absolute rubbish. The other point is that many of them are pay to view and they all contain advertisements which completely spoil the flow of any film. Climate change, what do they care. This forum is one of the very few internet sites I use, but should I be feeling guilty.?Ken Finch😔

Don’t worry Ken our politicians are on the job to sort out climate change. Plans are seriously being discussed to release chemicals to partially block out the sun or controlled nuclear explosions to reduce temperatures. What could possibly go wrong 🥹 watch for the sequel The Day the Earth caught a Cold. Get your winter coat out now.

Yes Nigel, we have had”The day the earth caught fire”, so that would be an appropriate sequel. It is really fascinating how so much of the writings of Jules Verne, H G Wells, George. Orwell and other science fiction authors works, made into films have now actually happened. I remember seeing the Georg PAL film Destination moon and telling my Dad about it. His response was, “Yes Ken, but it will not be in my lifetime” It did, even to the scenes of Armstrong’s moon walk. Oort ; better get my woolly underwear ready! Ken Finch😉

Nigel ? It is amazing to think what we achieved from 1960s to date with technology. Could be those wee silver Roswell beings helped us. I think mankind will finish itself off with its own stupidity and I don’t think it’s been the 1st time. That meteor belt floating between Mars and Earth could have constituted home once.

Least that nice Mr Musk is planning to build rockets to take the elite to the next planet. Funny how all the really rich people are thinking about space travel these days.

What shall we watch tonight. Terminator or Day After Tomorrow mind you it was a new ice age.

Do you know the only think keeping the Earth in its orbit is the Moon. If someone clever blew it up we would go floating in space like Swiss Family Robinson. Away to look at my thermal socks.

Speaking of traveling great distances, this thread has certainly done that. Let's stay on topic from now on, please.

In a way it will be a great shame not to be able to purchase a hard copy of a movie to preserve it as it was originally produced, as Disney has a tendersancy to alter its movies over time.
A prime example is Monsters inc. I remember running this on its original release, and it was a pleasure to do so. Why ? The ending allowed for the perfect showmanship presentation, and it was all down to the timing of the end credits.
This theatrical version was only available on the very first DVD release, and after this was altered to a completely new set of end credits. Destroying the magic of this wonderful film.
On the original version the end credits where animated all the way through, which made the audience sit to the very last frame. But this was very clever, as these were outtakes and bloopers from the movie, but remember this is a digital animated movie.
The Randy Newman song ran through the Disney logo into the Pixar trademark, with the very last note ending as the anglepoise lamp went out. This was total perfection and left the audience with a lump in their throat.
When Disney released it for the second time on DVD they wanted to add some bonus material to the disc, and used all of this footage to do so. But personality it should have stayed where it belonged.
I am so glad I held onto the original dvd release over the blu ray version, as it is now the only way of watching the film as it was intended to be.

Wait a minute, you have to pay to view a film, and you have to watch commercials too? Do the commercials pop in during the film/show, or are they just at the beginning and the end?

I thought that too. Defeats the purpose of paying for it.

I have only ever subscribed to one streaming channel but relatives have subscribed to others and it appears that they all have commercials popping up during the programme or film. With some you can pay extra to have them commercial free it seems!!! People complain about having to pay the licence fee to watch BBC but pay monthly fees to a number of streaming channels which annually cost more! I have also noted that of recent years the commercial breaks are more frequent than the used to be. When Disney made Swiss Family Robinson, they purchased the rights to the RKO 1940 version and promptly banned it. Fortunately it still exists for the likes of us on 9.5mm silent and sound, although quite rare. I have also seen some pirate dvds of it advertised on the internet. Probably made from the 9.5 sound version which was slightly abridged. Sorry to digress a bit Doug. Ken Finch.😉

I checked with Yvonne about advertising in Disney plus and the like, there are none, so it looks like you can watch movies etc without any problems. Interesting to read that you still need to have a TV license in the UK. Out here they did away with that requirement years ago. What Steve above mentioned about Monsters Inc, reminded me that when I watched the blu-ray of WALL-E it seemed to have lost something by changing it, compared to the 35mm print, which I think was really good and thankfully if I want to watch WALL-E I can screen the actual film print at home which I do every so often.

Regarding the future of Disney DVD or blu-ray well I guess that's up to them. In saying that there are still very good and unusual titles coming out from companies like Imprint. They have a excellent Facebook page, where you can shop and pre-order new releases which are coming thick and fast these days. I think there will always be a market for DVD and blu-ray for those smaller companies like Imprint, they might even get more customers going there way after Disney leaves. What Imprint does, is to release only a certain number of blu-ray of a particular title, before moving on to others, so if you see something you would like, you need to grab it quick.

Commercials, bah! Some programs are getting so short, that an hour long show can be from 30 to 35 minutes long!
