I was out and about a couple of days ago and just happened to call into JB Hi Fi to see what there latest release are. As I was going through the blu-ray and DVDs, to my surprise I came across "The Criterion Collection" Region "B" special imports of "Lord Of The Flies" 1963. I hadn't really thought much about this movie in the past and what I did remember, was the picture quality was not very good and the sound, well it sounded like it had been taken in a bath tub, as for the story of a bunch of kids that go out of control on a desert island, and that was about it.
That was my thinking from watching it long ago, so I was in two minds about buying it. After reading the reviews of the blu-ray quality I started to think, OK lets give it a go. This was a brand new release out here by Criterion so it wasn't cheap, butone of the things I like about this blu-ray, is the extras and this one was full of them
Now to the movie itself, projected using the Epson, the ratio was 1.37:1 the picture quality was excellent
the sound was very good, much much better than I remember it, and for the film itself I felt seemed a lot better and kept my interest in it a lot more. The conclusion after watching it, is that this a movie that was really well made. My previous thoughts of it before, went right out the window. Well done "Criterion" in doing all this work in restoring it, it really makes a huge difference
I have taken some screen shots of the making of, plus two from the feature itself the other night, which I should add the extras are most interesting. I now regard "Lord Of The Flies" as a important piece of Cinema history. Question...did it ever make it to Super 8? I do remember seeing it in 16mm in the Derann second hand list. Anyway if you have not watched it in a while, grab that Criterion blu-ray while you can, you wont regret it.
