  • Lord Of The Flies

I was out and about a couple of days ago and just happened to call into JB Hi Fi to see what there latest release are. As I was going through the blu-ray and DVDs, to my surprise I came across "The Criterion Collection" Region "B" special imports of "Lord Of The Flies" 1963. I hadn't really thought much about this movie in the past and what I did remember, was the picture quality was not very good and the sound, well it sounded like it had been taken in a bath tub, as for the story of a bunch of kids that go out of control on a desert island, and that was about it.

That was my thinking from watching it long ago, so I was in two minds about buying it. After reading the reviews of the blu-ray quality I started to think, OK lets give it a go. This was a brand new release out here by Criterion so it wasn't cheap, butone of the things I like about this blu-ray, is the extras and this one was full of them

Now to the movie itself, projected using the Epson, the ratio was 1.37:1 the picture quality was excellent the sound was very good, much much better than I remember it, and for the film itself I felt seemed a lot better and kept my interest in it a lot more. The conclusion after watching it, is that this a movie that was really well made. My previous thoughts of it before, went right out the window. Well done "Criterion" in doing all this work in restoring it, it really makes a huge difference

I have taken some screen shots of the making of, plus two from the feature itself the other night, which I should add the extras are most interesting. I now regard "Lord Of The Flies" as a important piece of Cinema history. Question...did it ever make it to Super 8? I do remember seeing it in 16mm in the Derann second hand list. Anyway if you have not watched it in a while, grab that Criterion blu-ray while you can, you wont regret it.

A couple of screen shots from the other night, the picture quality of this restoration is amazing, to think it was taken 63 years ago.

I don't think it ever made it onto super 8, unless there is a trailer out there, somewhere. It is a true fact that hatred, racism and such other societal evils are taught and handed down, not genetically passed down.

If you have the time, this Documentary on the 1996 Reunion is well worth watching.

I forgot to add this interesting blu-ray Criterion cover and the extensive list of extras. One I should add "Living Lord Of The Flies" comes directly from the "Criterion" collection and was made about 10 years ago, the narration by actor "Tom Gamon" who also appeared in the 1963 film. It includes 8mm home movie color footage, and also well worth watching.

In the booklet that comes with the blu-ray, there is a statement made by "Peter Brook" on the actual book that caught my attention, and its this....

Quote...."My experience showed me that the only falsification in Golding's fable is the length of time the descent to savagery takes. His action takes about three months. I believe that if the cork of continued adult presence were removed from the bottle, complete catastrophe could occur within one long weekend"...end of quote

Lord of the flies did make it to Super 8, as I have a print of it in my collection. 5 x 400ft, printed on Eastman b/w acetate stock but unclear date code, I guess early eighties. Picture and sound quality are so-so.

Many many moons ago when I was in school, the book was compulsory reading for our English Literature class. The book was enthralling and eventually it got a showing one late Friday night on ITV when the UK only had 3 channels.

I remember thinking then that the film looked scratched and worn out with low quality sound, even though it was made very well. It is good to know that there are now some decent digital copies available to be able to have a better experience of the film.

                Melvin

If you don't have blu-ray, but DVD, and want to watch it again I can certainly recommend getting the "Umbrella" release. Its Region 4 Aussie/NZ. The DVD is in the Pal format as UK. If you have a Region free DVD player it will work fine. Umbrella released it in 2018 and the picture quality of the transfer is very good.
