Too right. That's two people you have made their day for now Paul!
Thanks once again.

I love the entire look of my three cupboard shelves all uniform with the very same boxes for each of the main sizes in my collection.

I have a shelf for 1200ft films, one for features that are all on 2x800ft reels and then finally a shelf just for features that are as new in their original 600ft Derann boxes. All of the spine art ties in with one another and the collection then begins to look just that... a treasured collection where everything matches one another and a title stands out just by its artwork.

Even a rack full of Dvds or Blu Rays look good shelved, Films when uniform simply look fantastic!!

I just wish I could house these all in a display cabinet in the lounge area but sadly they are all behind cupboard doors so as not to agrevate the wife more than they do already each time one comes out for screening!! Ha ha.

Hey Andrew,
Yeah I had and sold a copy of Dumbo way back in the day, it was a bit grainy and soft but not too bad all things considered and not as soft as that 'truly' official Little Mermaid release!
Best
Rick

I brought this back to life having seen Ricky post here again today.

It's interesting looking back now on what Ricky says here now I have been lucky enough to track down "Mermaid" and " Dumbo" in the past 12 months.

Ricky's assessment of Dumbo regarding overall print quality is spot on I'd say, however when I received "Mermaid", I was a little bemused having read Ricky's and many other peoples comments regarding print quality on this one.

When I first viewed Mermaid, I noticed it wasn't AS good as the very best of the Derann Disney prints, however, on the one I have put screen shots out there of, it really isn't too far off the mark either.

At the time of posting the screenshots, i did ask the question if anyone knew whether some were better than others?
I know the first batch of these took quite a bit of criticism along the lines of what Ricky speaks of here regarding soft focus issues etc etc.

What I notice from mine is that it is far far superior to my Dumbo print for both grain and for the most part sharpness but i really don't know if this is just because it's a later than first released, first run print or not.

Anyone else have any experience with both of these prints from Derann / import?

Hi Andrew,
Good to read your comments.
Regarding Dumbo print quality, I wonder if there was more than one Negative 'source' for those 'Imported' feature prints? i.e.GB? and maybe Italy or Germany or?
I recall mine had better edge sharpness to the image than my Derann Little Mermaid, so maybe there was more than one printing source for Dumbo?
Best,
Rick

This Dumbo print of mine Ricky, is a German print. The Dumbo print falls very much in the bracket of "as expected" I'd say.

It's more the Mermaid print that I'm a little intrigued over Ricky. The one I have, really isn't too far off the standard that you'd expect from any other of the Derann Disney prints.
Highly detailed print, not at all grainy, excellent colour throughout, as you'd expect.
If there is a slight sharpness issue on this print, it's not apparent throughout and it is extremely slight.

Not enough from the first released Derann Disney print, to bring about the reaction I've seen on many counts regarding some of these first run prints.

I was overall, pleasantly surprised when I first viewed mine based on my expectations from reading the reviews and comments of other past owners.

So, I'm still left wondering if some of the later released prints were any better, based on initial customer reactions etc.
Was another negative supplied by the Disney Studios perhaps?

Just a thought.

Hi Andrew,
Sounds like you are luckier than most.
Maybe there was a printer fault in the print runs for a while? My personal experience was a soft one! Personally I can't watch animation unless the drawings are pin-sharp.
Best,
Rick

yes maybe Ricky. You're right though, the very best pin sharp animations are some of the very best to view on the Super 8mm gauge imo.

Many of the Disney Derann prints are among my highest quality prints that I own, or probably ever could! [Smile]

I bought 'The Little Mermaid' soon after it was released and I think mine is probably from the first batch, but I also feel the sharpness is better than people might imagine in view of some of the criticism. I don't recall hearing evidence of later improvements so I think it's simply a case of collectors expecting high standards and knowing that 'Mermaid' was not quite reaching the level of quality they would associate with a modern film and a negative supplied by a studio. I think a key factor was that Derann released 'Mickey's Christmas Carol' shortly before 'Mermaid' so everyone hoped that the high level of quality that this established would be the norm. I recall someone telling me that Derek had said to him that it may have been feasible to get a better negative from Disney, but he dared not do so because superior prints would have caused all the existing buyers to be more unhappy!

An interesting fact is that in the early days of the Disney deal it was said that the features would be available for a strictly limited period and with 'Mermaid' the end was flagged up and it was discontinued, but I'm not sure if that happened with other releases. Maybe it did with 'The Rescuers Down Under', but I believe Disney never imposed a limited period with most other feature releases.
