Does anyone know of a place/person who adds sound striping onto silent prints for a charge? I am thinking of adding sound to a few of my old silent digests...

Brian, this was discussed so often. You should be able to search by putting "striping" as the keywords.

Anyway here are the most related posts:

Some more info info

It's EVT Magnetics. Here is price:

The charges to stripe Super 8 film are;
6p per foot main track only 7.5p per foot main and balance stripe
Return postage extra. Payment in U.K by cheque overseas by agreement. Regret do not accept credit cards.

at least Christian has calculated that:

quote:
50' = £4
200' = £12
400' = £24
600' = £36
1200' = £72

cheers,

I was hoping someone had a striping service on this side of the pond - so the films didn't have to go all the way to the UK.

I have one 200ft cartoon I'd like to get striped as well Brian ...

So I add to the refrain ...

Does anybody in the US have one of those striping machines?

I'm sure there are a lot of striping machines around, and a few people that can operate them. The thing is that striping is kind of an art and there are no second chances if it goes wrong. An old friend of mine actually refused to stripe my films because he said he didn't want to risk messing them up.

For the sake of a couple more dollars and a few more weeks (days?) of shipping time , it's better to send it to EVT and get it done right.

To the best of my knowledge, the last striping service in the USA went out of business about 5 years ago. He was more expensive than EVT, and didn't have the experience Nick has.

Kinda Sad: I heard years ago when you sent your silent cartridges to Kodak for processing, for a little more money they'd stripe them too!

There is a machine on fleabay right now reasonably cheap.

The other question would have to be, even owning one of these striping machines, coming up with the actual stripe could be a problem as well. Sometimes these are sold with 50ft or 200ft worth of stripe, and other times without, and that stripe, (I would think) is rather hard to come by.

Hi Brian from your original post you never mentioned that you were looking something in the USA.

But as other has mentioned, no more in the USA so you just need to rely the EVT in the UK.

Buying own stripping machine without the availability of the magnetic stripping tape is just like having a gun without bullets...it is useless.

I don't believe that this kind of stripping tape is still being manufactured. I think EVT has a large stock to enough keep it running the business for years from now. But once it is gone, then it's gone

I found the website that actually sell super 8 mag. tapes at low price and some glue that sticks the track on any reversal stocks.Here is the link: http://www.wittner-kinotechnik.de/katalog/03_verbr/d_s8mm.php

Hi Nathan thanks the link.

The question is, will it stick to polyester or acetate base? many reversal film is polyester but commercial film from 1970s is on acetate.

It is a kinda hard to make a strip, sometime after couple screening, the stripe will peel of from the film.

BTW, although that website still sell brand new magnetic stripes, bu they are made by ORWO (was an East Germany company which is obvipously had closed down) and AGFA which wikipedia says

quote:
"In the past, Agfa film and cameras were prominent consumer products. However, in 2004, the consumer imaging division was sold to a company founded via management buyout. AgfaPhoto GmbH, as the new company was called, filed for bankruptcy after just one year.
So the condition is like I said above, "once it is gone, is gone"

You're welcome. I believe that wittner brought a big stock of mag. tapes from Orwo when it came out of business, I am not sure if i am correct. The Mag. tape should stick on both acetate and polyester.

All "home striping devices" only work for acetate-based filmstocks. They will not work for any polyester-based filmstocks.

Hi,

just wondering if EVT Magnetics in UK is still offering the striping services for Super 8 movies.

I tried some days ago to contact them by email at this address maltfilm@amserve.com (Nick?) that I found on another post in the forum, but none answered me so far.

Any alternative service possibly in Europe?

Thanks
F.

Good question.

The whole "amserve.com" seems to be gone from the internet. Hence I guess that Nick Maltezos now has got a new (secret) eMail-address.

Alternatives in Germany:
http://www.fipra.de/
http://www.filmbespurung.de/
Chris Filmtechnik GmbH (no internet, only telephone/fax)
http://www.fett-video.de/

Hi Joerg

thanks for the very useful information!

I have just checked the prices on 'fibra' and 'fett-video' web sites and noticed they ask differente price, and this is normal.

Indeed I'm surprised about the cost which is about 0,49-0,65 eur per a double track per meter!
This means tha a 180mt reel costs about 88,2-117 eur!

At the beginnig of this post there is a quotation from EVT where a 600 reel should cost 36 pounds, which considerably lower...

I'm quiet confused and also a bit disappointed... [Frown]

Hi,

prices per meter for stereo at fipra range from 0,40 EUR (Orwo tape without milling) to 1,10 EUR (Agfa tape incl. milling), at Jäger (Filmbespurung.de) it's 0,30 EUR (Orwo tape without milling), at Fett it's 0,49 EUR (Agfa tape without milling). EvT (if still in business) is using "liquid paste" instead of tapes.

Can anyone provide an opinion on the 'Liquid Paste' sound stripe system? How good is it performance wise and longevity? Is tape a better system?

I've heard that the EVT gentleman has retired, so I suppose that means no more striping services in the UK.

Did he junk his striping machine also? Or is it available for sale?

There are some rumours that his son now runs EVT... maybe I should simply try the old telephone-number the next days...
