Hi, just wondered if anyone knows anything ,i see some dealers have brand new prints available of films long deleted and wanted to know is it possible that any of these new and sealed prints can suffer from color fade ,or vs syndrome even though sealed as they are still going to be several years old

Yes Nigel, it is very much a possibility that the prints will have faded even if still sealed. I have purchased some new sealed shorts in the past and some were very good in colour while others had faded slightly.

Be wary of prints listed as new and still in original shrink-wrap. I've bought several over the years and found they're lack of exposure to air has indeed shrunk them thus rendering them near useless. Film need to breathe and 30-40 years in an airtight environment does them absolutely no good. Same with projectors. If it's never been used chances are the mechanical elements are going to be in not the best condition and the unit(s) may be in need of immediate and costly repair/replacement

Not only that, but I have run into"brand new in shrink wrap" prints and have found that they were recently shrink wrapped and not the original shrink wrap and in fact, used.

I bought a few sealed Disney 200ft extracts from a closing camera shop a couple of years ago. They were absolutely brand new, very smelly and very red. Nice boxes but a proper waste of money.

Mark, the smell can be removed but less can be done if it is very red. For low red prints, I am still using a filter I bought very cheap from a member of this forum. In some cases, it almost corrects completely the picture, in others it improves a little bit but in severe case it is not strong enough. I can imagine you can find more professionnals filters but of course at higher prices, so have to own a lot of red prints or valuables ones to consider such investment.

It's a nice thought that a sealed print might be protected from fade, but the only protection seems to be a freezer. Shrink wrapping won't help keep a film cooler!
