Hello Everyone,

I was at a local closeout store today and was looking through their light bulbs. I noticed there were some LED specialty bulbs that seem to have the same base/connection and are about the same size as the EFM bulbs on my Sankyo 500.

I think I remember reading about using LED style bulbs here before- what's the scoop? Do you have to do some rewiring or special conversion?

Hi Chad...What's the voltage on the LEDs you saw. I've seen a 12V - 50W LED MR16 base, but not a 8V.

Also beware of possible flickering issue if the bulb has flick of its own and does not match the shutter's frequency; this will most certainly result in a glowing image on screen.

Chad...Maurizio is absolutely correct. LED bulbs even though the voltage and wattage output are equal to the original halogen bulb may not disburse the light properly for projection. In the majority of cases... LEDs have been used more for Telecine work where the image is not projected, but rather captured directly off the film. LEDs run cool and are very suited for this.

However there are examples of LEDs being substituted for Halogen bulbs. I myself now use a LED bulb for projection on my Pathe Baby and Myron Baron on this forum has designed a LED substitution bulb for the CXR bulb used in the Sankyo 1000 and may also work on other projectors using this bulb.

So Janice, is there a way to tell if a particular LED bulb has a flickering problem? No doubt it all depends on the associated electronics.

I would think the only way to be sure it didn't flicker would be to use an expensive smoothed DC supply for the LED or a high capacity battery.

Someone in Thailand did a conversion using Xenon bulb which is intended for the car head light.

He is not a member of this forum but many of us here know him theough thw Facebook page.

Can you examine the good and the bad things with his conversion please.

This is my second post on this topic.

I think the flickerness on a LED lamp depends not on the power source but the inner circuit itself.

Nowadays non-flickering ones are being manufactured, or so are advertised. The one I bought some days ago doesn't flicker, or I am unable to notice it.

I'm still looking for a source of MR16 LED replacements; any ideas?
