Can anyone tell me if FILM RENEW can harm the magnetic stripe on Super 8. I'd also love to know the best way to use it. Spraying it on the side of the spool - does that really work? Thank you!

It will not harm the magnetic stripe.

I set up my film on a pair of rewinds then wet a small piece of cotton fabric with a few dabs of FilmRenew. Using latex or nitrile gloves fold the wetted cotton over the film so it contacts both sides of the film. With two fingers on the bottom and your thumb on top gently run the film through the wetted fabric. Re-wet and turn the fabric over as it dries and gets dirty. I use 100% cotton from old T-shirts that I cut up.

You can also soak the film in FilmRenew for a day or two before using the cotton if its really bad an dried out.

Do all this outside or in a well ventilated area. I let the film dry on the reel for a day in an outdoor cupboard before bringing them in the hose.

Thank you. If I were to soak a film, how much do you suggest. If I were to put a 400' reel of film in a tray, do actually fill the tray to submerge the reel?

Yes, you submerge the film. Make sure you’re using metal reels, FilmRenew will melt plastic and tape splices will come loose, even if you’re using it as I described above. All splices should be cement. I put the reel of film in its metal tin then pour enough over it to completely submerge it. Unless your film is really bad this isn’t usually necessary.
