As said, the rear inching knob needs to be rotated so the red dot is at 12 o'clock before changing the gates. In this position, the claw which moves the film will be withdrawn and safely out of the way. It follows that, at another position, the claw will be fully extended and liable to damage when changing the gates. Also, when changing the sprockets, you need to engage the latches under each, particularly the front one.
