Greetings all!
My first post here (have been active on doom9.org doing 8mm film restoration with Avisynth). I recently picked up a Eumig 810D. The good news is, aside from 24fps reverse, everything mechanically seems to work fine. I'll work on adjusting the main motor and the rubber pads to try to get 24fps reverse to work, but in I can live with out that function.

Now what is not working is the sound, here are the symptoms and what I've done and diagnosed:

1. Pressing the record button makes a horrid noise at any volume level (ie the volume knob doesn't control the sound). It's a buzz w/a higher frequency thrown in.
2. Playing a film results in the amp turning on, if you turn the volume up (even just a little) you do get a hum, but my understanding this is normal.
3. I've pressed the record button in and out about 100+ times and squirted it with alcohol (don't have contact cleaner)
4. I've squirted the N+S switch about 100+ times and squirted it with alcohol (don't have contact cleaner)
5. I've removed the sound pickup head, cleaned the 4 contacts
6. While the projector is running and the amp is on, if you unplug the sound head and tap your fingers on the female plug, you'll hear some quick static over the speaker, this seems to tell me the amp is ok.

So am I correct in assuming either my sound head is dead, the N+S switch is dead, or something else?

Any suggestions would be great.

Also if it is indeed the sound head, what models (other than 810) have the same head that I can replace it with?

Thanks!

Todd

I reckon that if you ever do get the sound working, any dialogue is going to be very slurred after spraying all that alcohol on it [Smile]

Hi Todd, Did you try to touch the sound head? To see if you are getting a response. See if the vu meter moves! If the vu meter moves than its not the sound head. Let me know! Leon Norris.

The Eumig 810 has no VU meter. You might want to try disassembling the sound head and giving it a really good clean per this procedure:

Hi Todd. I had an 810 with very much the same problem that you are describing. I thought it came down to the record switch. However, I actuated it about 472 times with no change (with spraying contact cleaner on the contact). I think it was after about 903 times that the sound started working. So, although it is exhausting, I wouldn't rule out the record switch. I would get some contact cleaner and keep working on that.

Well no go here guys. I took off the read head, tried touch that w/the projector running. no dice. Remember if unplug the read head from the amp and touch the amp connectors I get a buzz/thud sound as I tap it w/my finger.

I'm suspect the read head is dead.. thoughts?
