Extending from Leonard's idea. If your short film is... - Really short, just less than 3 minutes (to fit well within 50ft film's limit) - No audio required (or you intend to dub it later anyway) - You need only ONE copy, and one copy ONLY. - And finally, you happen to have a Super 8 camera with reflex viewfinder&stop motion function.
You may, in theory, play your short film FRAME BY FRAME on high quality monitor (in dimly lit room, no reflection on the screen of course) and use the animation function on the camera to capture each frame shown on the screen.
This setup should be relatively low-cost compared to sending it to professional lab to do this film-out. Only drawback is that about 3,600 shutter press is required for this process.
For a one-time work this should be just bearable. Anything beyond that, you may have to consider "automate" the process somewhat.
