Look at this ...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1985-Super-8-Magnetic-Sound-Disneys-Cocoon-Derann-Print-Full-Length-Feature-EX-/282425555425?hash=item41c1dff9e1:g:~GIAAOSwmgJY4-45

OK, "Cocoon" is a good movie, and the super 8 print was very good, but that's even going beyond "STAR WARS' territory for a selling price (and it still has FOUR days!

No vinegar syndrome on a Mylar base film, not really a surprise there.

I was beginning to think that the price for Star Wars prints was because they were Star Wars as I have seen the vinyl double album of the first soundtrack (early pressing with poster) up for £100, however it seems I was wrong.

anyone who pays high prices for films is totally NUTS. lets face it its the people who are willing to pay stupid money that keeps them high priced anyway.and it doesnt just happen in this hobby either. there is always some nutter out there ready to part with their money.its the reasons they give for buying that make me laugh.trying to justify what they have just bought. its rare, lovely colours, its like new,i was lucky to get it,i paid high but its worth it. do me a favour please.

To be honest with you, (David your right on there), not that many go for these prices when you look at the bigger picture, (no pun intended there),, if the seller gets his dosh then good luck to him, as for the person who actually parts with the money, well, i wouldn't be allowed to put my words on here but i think you know where i'm coming from. Only an idiot would pay it. Its a good film but it aint no classic and it certainly inst worth a quarter of this. [Wink]
I actually think it's quite funny really, if it isn't paid then it has to be listed again. if he had come on here and 500 it would probably have sold, (still double what i think it would be worth),
You have to take a reality check here , what is it?
Its a cine movie, it isn't Gold and its available on many other formats that can be used to see it as intended, on the big screen. If it does sell and get paid for it's just making me wonder more and more why i am holding onto over 450 titles and 175 trailers n promo's.
My recent adventures into 16mm are looking much more realistic at present [Wink]

$2000 for Derann's "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". Wow!
I bought my copy brand new from Derann in May 1996 for £249.99.
It has a sticker on its box celebrating Derann's 30th Anniversary.

These are ridiculous sums of money for any one film David, I agree.
However the sum Maurice originally paid, I would personally be of the mindset of money well spent for what is a truly beautiful print on the favoured pre stripe laminated low fade stock.

So there you go then.
£ 150 for a 16mm on LPP stock ... BARGAIN !
£ 250 for a Super 8mm print maybe on LLP stock... NO BARGAIN !
I rest my case.

I take your point Maurice regarding new vs old.
I too have paid such sums in the past for new prints I still have
in my collection.

However give me an as new condition 16mm print over Super 8mm print any time.
I have both 16mm and Super 8mm prints of the same features in my collection.
Some of my Super 8mm features are Derann releases and to be perfectly frank I find the Super 8mm prints a bit soft in focus and lacking definition when compared with the 16mm print.

For example THE SMALLEST SHOW AND EARTH and WHISKY GALORE.
My 16mm copies blow the Derann Super 8mm prints into the weeds
when it comes to picture quality and printed steadiness.

Agreed.
I have used 16mm professionally in the fifties with a circuit of village halls in Somerset. And latterly, when my Classic cinema experimented with 16mm using an Eiki xenon with 6000ft spools.
My 16mm collection has many more titles than my films on Super 8, Bill Davidson coined the expression "The Bootlace Gauge" many years ago and I always think of that when handling 8mm.

Maurice I too have ran quite a number of 16mm prints professionally in Cinemas to packed houses.

I have operated Fumeo pedestal mounted with Xenon and 6000 foot spools.
Also standard 2200 foot Elf 16mm projectors.

I have ran shows for the late Ron Miller of 'Movieman' and 'Donald Of The Colours' fame.
Also some shows for the then Grampian Television before they
got merged into the Scottish Television station.

Most memorable though was working alongside Janet McBain of the
Scottish Film Archive.
That was fun because not only did I have to run 16mm and 35mm films at sound and silent speeds but had to interchange some with
stuff on Video via a Sony three gun tube Video projector.
What a day that was. Hard work but fun all the same. [Smile] [Smile] [Smile]
