Hi folks,

Does anybody know of a good UK based or otherwise super 8 camera repair/servicing firm?

Recently, I got hold of a Canon 814 XL-S which looked totally new, perfect optics and electronics. However, I notice that when running the motor I can hear a rasping sound that kicks in every 3 seconds @25fps and comes in at correspondingly slightly longer intervals at 18/9 fps. Nevertheless, the camera runs perfectly otherwise and the lens zooms etc. I am amazed that a camera that probably hasn't been run in 30 years, is still workes at all!

If anybody knows what this might be (something to worry about or not) or if it could resolve itself through use, or needs lubrication. I wonder who might be the best Canon option in the U.K. (Anybody even still capable of servesing S8?) or an abroad option?.

I would love to keep this camera working as I plan to shoot several super 8 projects going forwards, especially with new Kodak S8 films promised :-)

Many thanks

Danny

Danny,
I haven't noticed much camera talk on this forum. Have you tried www.cinematography.com. ? You might have better luck there.
Best, Peter G.

Hello,

Although I do not know of anywhere that services cameras, I have had good success tending to my own cameras.

My main site might have a few links that might be helpful:

good luck,

Thanks everybody.

As it turns out, it runs perfectly albeit with that repetitive rasp. I found a couple of US/Canada based specialist who can fully service the Canon. Poor response on U.K. Side, so I will send it overseas if I need to. One of the best repair options is listed below if anybody needs it.

Best

Daniel,
