So, what are the Derann prints of this like?

This one looks in good condition:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Super-8mm- FEATURE-The-Wizard-Of-Oz-4-x-600ft-Sound-AU506-/281631603620?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item41928d3ba4

But the B/W parts look green-tinted. I wouldn't mind a nice print of this. But this one is also too expensive I think. Derann must have done a lot of these? I had a quick look back through the forum but didn't see much on tints only the usual Derann issues of 'some are Kodak and some are Agfa, Kodak better.' Which one is this?

Also, where there Ken full length prints?

All I will say Steven, is quality comes at a price!

This may very well be THE most expensive print of the Wizard Of Oz you will ever see on Super 8. But I doubt a better one could be found!

1/ Comes with the Original Derann box in fantastic condition and still has the cellophane on it!
2/ Print comes just as it would if brand new. On original Derann issued Grasso reels and with all leads and tails untouched.
The film has never been mounted to large reels.
3/ I can virtually guarantee that this print will be totally unmarked, free of any emulsion scratches and is therefore the nearest thing you could ever now own to a brand new Derann print of this!

Show me another that ticks all the above boxes if you can! [Wink]

Me too David, and they are always "as good as it comes".

If I won the lottery this evening, I wouldn't hesitate, but all us mere mortals have to have their limits sadly.

Andrew are you the seller? Or a friend of the seller? I thought the image looked very clean and I have purchased from the seller before but I would have to look back over the PayPal to check the ID. The only quibble I saw was the tinting, but that may be more the camera than the print. If you are familiar with the print and vouch for it then I will have to give it serious thought. Thanks for posting.

No Steven, not me, no relation or friend etc etc.ha ha

Just someone I have purchased from on a number of occasions and whilst the items are never the cheapest, they are some of the very best I own or indeed could ever own now that Derann are sadly a fading memory.

As far as this particular print, I cannot vouch for it sadly Steven, I am simply going off past purchases in my prediction that it will have no noticeable damage at all to the print when projecting it.

As for the colour discrepancies, it's a difficult one to judge given that it's a B/W and Colour film all in one.

Therefore this has to be printed on colour stock and, as we know, B/W prints don't look quite right on colour stock.
When I look at the colour sequences though, they simply look magnificent to my eyes so for me personally, I would not be deterred by the slight bluish tones to the early sequences.

I truly believe that if this is a film you love, you probably now, won't find a better one on Super 8.

You may want to ask the seller about the tint though. While most of the Derann prints are very good I did get a soft focus print of "The Fog" once and it happened to be a lab defect that made its way to the used lists.
I returned it and now have a pin sharp print!

When I last showed this film on 35mm, the first reel was on black & white stock, the second reel started the Technicolor reels.
The changeover was quite a shock to some of the audience who no doubt thought they were seeing a black & white film!

l know the seller personally and have some great titles from him and all l will say is you get what you pay for and thats quality and honesty.

Love my print of Wizard of oz, it's a LPP print from MGM itself and one l will never part with.

This film has a green tint because the print run was developed in one shot by using the Kodak LPP low fade color film stock. LPP makes the black & white portions of the film biased towards the blue/green color spectrum.

My film has the same tint, and I do not know if the earlier film prints used Agfa stock.

There are advantages of using LPP, because it was Kodak's best low fade stock that will not fade for fifty years, and when LPP is properly printed it can equal 35mm IB Technicolor. As you can notice that the Derann print has rich color saturation, and it replicates IB Technicolor.

The B&W sections of Oz were sepia toned when the film was released in 1939. The reason was to tell the story of a bleak, dreary prairie life before transitioning to the Technicolor OZ. There is a theatrical film stock reel changeover that is precisely made when Dorothy walks through the door to OZ. Derann would have needed to print the film on a Black & White film stock to achieve the best results. The Agfa stock would have been closest to replicating the Sepia effect.

After WWII, MGM used a Black & White film neg. for these sequences, and until the film was released to video for the Fiftieth Anniversary is when the sepia sections were restored.

This print is sharp, beautiful, and very expensive. It's your decision on how much you are willing to spend, but eventually everything becomes available.

I think most people on here and elsewhere are only too aware Steven of what becomes available so I think you need not worry about it impacting the final sale price on this.
