So, my gate is now working fine but there is a new problem with my RCA 416. I was watching film last night. All was well until I went to change the reel. I was horrified at what I found. There was a pile of film on the floor. The take up had stopped about 10 min before the reel was over. It has never done that before.

I carefully wound the film back onto the reel. I put on the next reel and watched the take up as it ran. It was working perfectly. Then about halfway through the reel the take-up started to get very sluggish and then it stopped. I tried to adjust the belt but that did not help. I put a bit of machine oil on it. That seemed to help for about 5 min. then it stopped again.

The good news is the upper belt is working just fine.

Is my lower belt dead or is there a way to adjust it inside so it will work again? If the belt is stretched out, can I cut some of it off, reconnect the coils and make it smaller? If I have to get a new belt, where can I find one for a projector that's over 50 years old?

As before, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Try another reliable film, check if it's smooth running into the take up reel. Occasionally, there are prints that are warped and do not wind properly into take up reel, making it very off-balanced. This would also cause the same problem with the belts in working order.
