Gerald
I see that you have/had a Bolex S321 projector and had a problem with the take-up, which was noisy. I have the same problem. How did you overcome it?

Hi Terry,

This is an awesome machine, on my projector, the take up reel revealed noise during rewinding. I talked to Barry Fritz about the problem, his "diagnosis" was perhaps the metal belt needing replacement, it was slipping during rewind and occasionally during play.

The only way that I could prevent the noise on the machine was to only use it as a play machine and avoid rewinding. The noise occurred mostly near the end of the rewind, while film was loaded onto the supply reel so, torque was certainly an issue but I could never truly remedy the noise.

The best I could do was to put pressure on the take up reel with my finer tips. Kind of like when a record is slowed down on a turntable by resting your finger on the center spindle, you apply pressure on the spindle to the take up. I received it that way when I bought it and never truly figured out how to solve the problem. I tried oil, grease, tinkering with it but, nothing worked---only applying pressure to the spindle.

Thanks Gerald
I think it's probably not fixable as you say, because there are no oil points and no visible adjustments. Something probably I will have to live with. Other than that a beautiful machine. The Mercedes Benz/Rolls Royce of projectors. Everything you would expect of a Swiss made machine. Such precision and attention to detail and built to last. Do you still have yours?

I sold my machine over a year ago and it went fast to a buyer in China that paid to have it shipped there. Obviously, it's a very valuable machine to the right collector. The chassis is superb and it's silver/chrome finish is super attractive and elegant.

The noisy spindle issue is minor compared to the picture quality and rock steady image, and adjustable frame rate. The magnetic option and sound quality shows brilliant clarity and an almost "hi-fi" experience. The machine is not very quiet to start with so, it is really a beautiful show piece for the collector guest, for telecine transfer and for personal show.

It runs like a bullet train so, if a very bad splice goes through, it reveals it's only flaw; the lack of a proper loop restore. I would have kept it if I had the room but, after owning it for a few years, I settled on my Kodak machines that I run more often. I still look forward to finding another but, my chances are slim as these are still very sought after and now internet searches may balloon prices.

Yes they are becoming hard to find now, especially in good condition. You're correct about the inability to cope with damaged film though and the fact that it does not shut down immediately means that if you are not careful it is easy to cause further damage. The way to avoid it is to throw open the gate. Not ideal, but always best to check film on a rewind beforehand. Haven't seen one on eBay for a while now.
