At the moment, my 8 & 16mm searches on UK eBay don't work and film listings only appears in "Other Formats". I suppose they have gone rather than been moved anywhere else? I can't make any sense of this because some obsolete video formats still have their own category and these have far less listings than 8 and 16mm did. Or is it something wierd on my PC and others can still see the film categories?

Hi Adrian,no the film formats are still there under film stock, then
a list of the various gauges. It might just be a fault in the system,
I have fell foul of it twice.

Adrian,

My saved eBay searches have been automatically changed to fall under the category that Hugh mentioned, "Film Stock". I assume eBay has recently created this classification to replace the "Film" grouping.

I think the decision to re-form under "film stock" is the right way since there is misunderstanding now between film as "movie" or as the material.

In fact we always say here "that film is not filmed on film" [Big Grin]

But why they didn't make a sub-category "Celluloid"?...isn't this more correct to accommodate all film gauges?

I think this is great since now people shouldn't list DVDs and VHS tapes under "Film", although there is still no guarantee that people won't.

My searches work as they've always done. I type in "16mm film" or "8mm film" and the usual lists come up.

Thanks for the replies. I think this is causing a lot of confusion, at least in the UK. I looked up what's listed under the Super 8 and 16mm sections of "Film Stock" and only found 19 and 7 listings respectively - a fraction of what you would normally expect. In 16mm, only two of the listings were films, the others were either genuine film stock or reels. No doubt other films are appearing in the vague "other formats" category. In the circumstances, I think the previous format worked better because at least you knew that a very high proportion of the films of a particular guage were going to be in the category in question. "Film stock" obviously has other connotations; some of the Super 8 listings are unused reels of Kodachrome.

Michael - I think the reason your searches are still effective is that you are sidestepping the problem with fragmented categories by simply bringing up the listings featuring the words Super 8 or 16mm film. It probably makes sense for us all to do the same thing, although you might miss a few listings where the seller has not included the word film.

I've confirmed how hopeless the 'Film stock' categories are in the UK. As mentioned above, I wound 19 Super 8 and seven 16mm listings in these. When I searched for films in "Other formats", I found over 550 Super 8 films and about 220 16mm films. So basically practically everyone is ignoring the Film stock categories and continuing to put films in the same area as DVDs, etc, even though they cannot put them on a specific 8 or 16mm list there.

Here in the US when I do a search I go to "DVD/Movies" then put in "8mm" and then choose "film"

Now "film" is "film stock" but I still get the same 600-700 listings.

Adrian's quite correct in what he's saying, when I punched up the
filmstock topic,it registered a mere handful of titles.Although when
you do as Michael does, it gives rather more impressive results.
It strikes me someone on ebay likes fixing something that isn't
broken.

Seems to me that ebay has dispensed with the 8mm catagory so finding the package movies now relies on people entering a 'search'. This is a backward step for us film sellers because it relies on getting the exact wording correct. I have put 3 items on using the word 'super 8', but if someone sets up their search for 8mm or 8mm film, my items will not show up in the listing.
Has anyone else come to this conclusion? Not sure what the answer is. Possibly use as may words as possible when setting up the lising, eg 'super 8 standard 8 8mm film packaged movie'

I have allways simply punched in 'standard 8'--'super 8' etc.(under the 'all categories' standard setting), and got what I was after. Going through 'Categories' then 'Film stocks' seems to be the long way round the bush.

Alan the way you do will give many results for equipments (camera, projector, splicer, editor, etc) and film stock (Ektachrome, Tri-X, Kodachrome, etc). Not to mention those DVD as a result the later movies ("Super 8", "8mm", and don't forget those home movies). This will create so many misleading resuts when we are looking for super 8 film package.

I am rather avoiding that way.

Enter 'super 8 films' or 'Super 8 features' and you get all the package films you want.

Allan, that will work too.

But if you don't want to get around the bush to find "Film Stock", you can always start by clicking this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Film-Stock-/63821/

or "Other format":

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Other-Formats-/41676

...and save to your browser. [Wink]

cheers

I always just search for 'Super 8 film'. Works every time for me. Sure I get a few dvds like super 8, but mainly all the films. I never use the categories.

I totally agree. It's not that difficult.

Er, yes, just type "super 8"..."16mm", etc. [Confused]

And based upon recent experience, including tonight, people just "snipe" the film anyway.

Give me a good film dealer anyday...
